Garden produce

Monday 25th August 2014, 1.05pm (day 1,096)

Garden produce, 25/8/14

Always nice when the garden starts paying off to some extent. Plums, apples, potatoes, picked up at the allotment on this drizzly late August afternoon.

It’s my birthday tomorrow, which means two things, first that the title of this blog is going to be three years out of date, and therefore, that I have managed to document three full years of my life as of today. Exactly one-fifteenth of it in fact. It’s another point when I might have considered stopping, but there are enough things coming up that will be interesting to document so I’m not bored enough yet. See you tomorrow.

Lemon and orange zest

Friday 13th September 2013, 2.30pm (day 750)

Zest, 13/9/13

As grated into this reflective metal bowl this afternoon, while I was making blackberry wine. The reflections are cool, sort of like the old BBC globe that used to get smeared across a mirror while you waited for the next programme to start, at some point in the 1970s. Clearly I need a weekend.

Day 750. Gosh, three quarters of the way to 1,000 – which I believe I reach at some point in April, and might as well now go for. As it’s a multiple-of-50 milestone I’ve updated the Best of the Rest page with a couple more shots that nearly made the main blog.

Making rabbit pie

Thursday 26th July 2012, 10.00pm (day 336)

Carol and Joe cooking, 26/7/12

Here I am at the in-laws’ for a bit. It’s the school summer vacation so Joe can stay up until late. Tearing him away from the TV or the DS is a good plan, teaching him the rudiments of cooking, with his gran Carol, an even better one. He can, at least, wield a Worcester sauce bottle with aplomb, as this proves.

Making pickle

Saturday 16th June 2012, 11.40am (day 296)

Pickling, 16/6/12

Nutclough Pickle. Ingredients: 1 cauliflower, 1 cucumber, a few small onions, 2 pints of vinegar, mustard powder, turmeric, 2 cloves garlic, some salt, 300g sugar, nutmeg, allspice and a few tablespoons of flour. Cook up together and bung in a jar for a few weeks, then give to relatives and keep some for yourself.

At work in the kitchen

Tuesday 20th December 2011, 12.20pm (day 117)

Chopped beetroot, 20/12/11

A week off work, but I’m at home. When this happens I tend to cook. I like doing it and I like the results, which also tend to go down well with others. I don’t have to do Christmas dinner this year, so let’s get the time in now.
