Feeding the birds

Sunday 6th January 2013, 12.30pm (day 500)

Feeding birds, 6/1/13

Five hundred days. Well well. An ordinary day to mark this milestone, however. Captured this shot on the way to the supermarket; a more in-focus version of this shot, taken from the same spot some nine months ago.

Seagulls, Hebden Bridge

Friday 23rd November 2012, 11.40am (day 456)

Seagulls HB, 23/11/12

In Northern England it’s never possible to be that far from the sea, but here in Hebden Bridge we are about as far as you can get. Nevertheless these seagulls seemed to wish to make the old bridge their home this morning. Of course, what they don’t know is that I’m the Hebden Bridge Seagull in these parts (see the Brighton & Hove Albion thing).

Pigeon feeding, Manchester

Monday 23rd April 2012, 4.45pm (day 242)

Pigeon feeding, 23/4/12

I’m in the middle of what is, for me, quite a long run of days without going anywhere in particular. So I have to find photographic succour in Hebden Bridge and Manchester, familiar territory but there’s plenty to see if you look around.

Lille Lungegårdsvannet, Bergen

Wednesday 22nd February 2012, 4.25pm (day 181)

Lille Lungegårdsvannet, 22/2/12

This is an artificial lake in the centre of Bergen, by the art museum. It’s actually not that cold here (although the weather was still revolting today), but there’s still this scrim of ice on the surface of the lake, enough to support these birds’ weight and provide a nice optical illusion effect to add to the other nice patterns and colours on this shot.

Pigeon meeting

Sunday 12th February 2012, 1.20pm (day 171)

Pigeon meeting, 12/2/12

“OK everyone. We just missed our scavenging targets this morning so I’ve adjusted the afternoon rota accordingly. Frank, Paddy, you two are on tourist duty in the square. Simon – fish & chip shop. Who wants to take the path at the side of the river? I know, I know, there’s a lot of those bastard ducks around today, but that’s why we need someone flexible, not afraid to take risks. Cecilia – I think you’re ready.”

Flying south

Thursday 22nd December 2011, 11.35am (day 119)

Flying south, 22/12/11

I probably come across as someone who disagrees with the way Britain is currently being run – which I admit. But despite it all there are still a lot of things about this place that I really like. One of them is how, after days and days of cruddy weather, you can wake up one morning, even in midwinter, and be immersed in an utterly glorious day. Such a day was today. If we thought it would last, you might even say these birds had made the wrong decision. I suspect, however, they are more sensitive than I.

By the way, another good candidate for today can be seen on my Flickr site, unused because I thought there had been too many HB scenic views and this one was more unusual. I still like it though, both are good reminders of a spectacular morning.
