Early morning, Manchester

Wednesday 21st November 2018, 7.20am (day 2,645)

Royal Exchange arcade, 21/11/18

It’s becoming harder to crank myself up in the mornings to get the 06:32 — best train it might be, when I need to pull an early start at work, but it’s now still dark even when it deposits me in Manchester city centre, a state of affairs which will last until into February. Some places have the lights on at that time, but by no means all. This should be the last of a run of a couple of months spent only in England, but I’m off somewhere else for a few days tomorrow.

Double rainbow (and rain)

Tuesday 20th November 2018, 9.05am (day 2,644)

Double rainbow, 20/11/18

This one definitely isn’t going to win any photography awards, but what the hell, rainbows are nice to look at, particularly when the light is bright enough to produce the rare double rainbow. On which the colours are always the other way around, remember. This shot also records the other thing you need for a rainbow, beyond the light…. A sign of authenticity at least?

Pampas grass (office window view)

Monday 19th November 2018, 10.20am (day 2,643)

Pampas grass, 19/11/18

I try when I can to make these photos somehow epitomise the day, but this is an exception. I spent almost the whole day in a room interviewing job applicants. This is just a shot grabbed out of my office window, in one of the few bursts of light on this otherwise grey November Monday. But I like these natural feather dusters, Cortaderia selloana or pampas grass. Very 1970s. Then again so’s the building I work in.

Eggs for lunch

Sunday 18th November 2018, 12.45pm (day 2,642)

Eggs, 18/11/18

Sometimes I have to work on Sundays, though always at home. Today, a sudden desire for soft-boiled eggs was one unexpected consequence.

Goal number four

Saturday 17th November 2018, 2.25pm (day 2,641)

Whitworth Valley goal 4, 17/11/18

No apologies for including the football shot today — firstly because I like this one, a matter of being in the right place at the right time, perhaps, but the light is good (despite the splodge of flare in the centre). And also because this is my namesake team scoring, in green and white; Whitworth Valley FC. The opposing keeper nearly reached it — but not quite. This was the fourth of many goals that went past him today. And yes, there have only been 25 minutes played.

With this shot, the well-named, but otherwise not very exciting, town of Whitworth also becomes named location number 250 on the blog. So that’s one new place every 10.5 days or so — that is a decent amount of variety.

Christmas lights switch-on

Friday 16th November 2018, 5.00pm (day 2,640)

Xmas switch on, 16/11/18

The Campaign for Real Christmas long ago lost its fight to restrict this festival to December, and so Hebden Bridge, like most other places, can’t wait for November to end before switching on its decorations and accompanying this with the sale of vast amounts of plastic that within two weeks will be in landfill somewhere. But the photo opportunities this affords were better than those at work today, so here we go, it’s Advent — here, anyway.

100 years and 4 days on

Thursday 15th November 2018, 10.10am (day 2,639)

War memorial, 15/11/18

Yesterday’s sunset presaged a bright, sunny day, but I was inside for most of it. A brief foray out this morning did at least offer the opportunity to get my tribute in for the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War 1. Four days late, but the poppies are still in formation.

Apocalypse Now (over there)

Wednesday 14th November 2018, 4.30pm (day 2,638)

Oblivious to sunset, 14/11/18

For about fifteen minutes this evening the sunset turned the sky into a blazing inferno. It came and went away again very quickly and several people I spoke to later, who had been inside at the time, had no idea what they had missed. They can be excused — but not the people on the train, who seemed far more interested in their screens than the real-life show outside. I wanted to be sat on their side of the train for the best show. But I guess this shot illustrates it well enough.

The immediate vicinity

Tuesday 13th November 2018, 5.05pm (day 2,637)

Lees Road, 13/11/18

The immediate vicinity… being that region around my house (not quite visible on this shot)… which I did not leave today, at least not in any meaningful photographic way. The red lighting is explainable by being under the traffic lights at this point: one could get a green-tinted version of the same shot if one so desired.

The dentist’s hands (reprised)

Monday 12th November 2018, 4.25pm (day 2,636)

Dentist and Joe, 12/11/18

I do try not to repeat myself on here, but after 2,636 days it’s gonna happen, sorry — so here is another version of the shot offered on day 1,134, 2nd October 2014. Same hands, same dentist, and same person — Joe — being inspected. But also a better version of the shot, I feel. We come here every few months, roughly, so the next time you might see this is some time in late April next year. Or perhaps not.
