None of my students are present — they all usually graduate in December — but the summer graduation ceremonies bring a last burst of life to the campus before it really shuts down for high summer. Not that there were any attendees yet present this morning when I took this shot. Not much light in Manchester this morning but the seats have caught a dim flicker.
…so I think the Tour de France should be the subject of today’s picture… don’t you? I doubt any other world-class sporting event is going to come within a few feet of my front door again. Of all the ones I got today I like because of my friend Simon’s smile, and also the fact it has the yellow jersey on it — he’s just visible in the centre.
I like the way this bird (which apparently is a jackdaw, not a rook as I originally identified it) looks aspirational, as if it’s seen something up there and (unlike poor grounded humanity) knows that within a couple of seconds it can reach it. I also like the focus and the lines of the slates below it. All not bad going for 6.45am, the first time I’ve done a shot remotely at this time since November.
Canal Street in Manchester is best known for being the street in the midst of the Gay Village; but it does actually still have a canal beside it. This is probably the first time I have seen a working boat on it. If you barge it for long enough, by the way, in a generally northerly direction, this is also the canal that goes through Hebden Bridge, as seen many times on this blog in the past.

I make it there are 20 mallards in this picture, and unless I’m mistaken, every one of them is asleep. Proof of one thing anyway — ducks are sensible creatures, who keep leisurely working hours.
This subway takes you from the Sussex campus under the A27 and to Falmer station — a route I took after my half-day’s work at the conference.
Yes, a conference I want to attend in a place I want to go to full of people I want to see. There is a reason that Brighton, despite being hundreds of miles from my house, has featured on this blog reasonably regularly.
Time to slip in another football reference, as we are now 11 days into the World Cup. Beautiful day in Manchester (and in most of the rest of the UK) today.
This building will be the only one of the Høgskolen’s five campuses to survive following its imminent move to the new campus in Kronstad, and as a result, is the only one currently able to host our project meetings. It plunges directly into the water of Bergen’s most inland inlet of the sea. Behind is the mountain of Ulriken. And the concrete post? Well, directly above my head as I took this shot, but kept out of frame, is a big concrete overpass taking the main city road over the water, so presumably it just fell of there at some point.
