Sunset outside the Railway

Wednesday 13th August 2014, 7.05pm (day 1,084)

Sunset outside Railway, 13/8/14

After a day working in Manchester, which did not succeed in inspiring me, I came home via the usual haunt and, frankly, just started pissing about with the camera. But I quite like this one. Maybe it’d be better without the pole growing from the guy’s head, but then again it also gives it that little extra surreal touch.

Asleep in the cafe, Liverpool Lime Street station

Saturday 2nd August 2014, 11.05am (day 1,073)

Asleep, 2/8/14

This is also how I felt this morning after our night out in Liverpool. I hope this woman didn’t miss her train — she was asleep in the cafe at the railway station for some time.

Outside the tourist information centre, Hebden Bridge

Tuesday 29th July 2014, 5.10pm (day 1,069)

Tourist info centre, 29/7/14

A day at home, no work, no responsibilities, no worries. I have no idea how to caption this photograph — so I’m not going to worry about that, either.

The Last Pizza?

Sunday 27th July 2014, 12.05pm (day 1,067)

Last pizza, 27/7/14

She’s certainly going for it as if it might be. Like us, this lady was in the departure lounge of Fiumicino airport, but, I suspect, leaving her home country rather than returning to it.

Shelter from the storm

Tuesday 22nd July 2014, 11.20am (day 1,062)

Shelter, Palatine Hill, 22/7/14

First full day in Rome. It would be easy here to slip into just doing a series of photos of the tourist sights. Today we saw the Colosseum (impressive, but as expected, heaving with people), the Baths of Caracalla (stupendously impressive, and with a notable absence of coach parties) and the Palatine Hill.

The latter was worth visiting but notable for being the place where we were caught in a severe thunderstorm for an hour or so, which is when I took this shot, of these two Chinese women in their waterproof ponchos (being touted at €5 each while it was raining), in the first of the two spots in which we tried to avoid the rain. I like the strange positioning of the hand of the one in green, and yes, her friend is standing on one leg at this point.

Jomo Kenyatta airport, early morning

Friday 11th July 2014, 6.25am (day 1,051)

Nairobi airport bar, 11/7/14

I only post this early when I’m travelling, and here’s the second really early one in a week. Nairobi’s airport seems to have about fifty duty free shops and one bar/café, this one. I like this shot, particularly as I wasn’t really giving it a great deal of thought, I just captured the bar scene randomly but I like the way he’s been caught. And I was only having a cup of tea. Honest, guv.

Walker, summit of Arthur’s Pike

Saturday 28th June 2014, 12.20pm (day 1,038)

Walker, Arthur's Pike, 28/6/14

Another Lake District walk today. I was sat down having my lunch on the summit of Arthur’s Pike (1747 feet above sea level) when this other walker came over to admire the view and I just snapped him from below, the Pennines in the background. More photos and text will appear on my other blog tomorrow, but not tonight. A cloudy day, as you can see; OK for walking but June is never a great month for photography.

Cinema steps

Sunday 15th June 2014, 1.50pm (day 1,025)

Cinema steps, 15/6/14

Was taken here this afternoon to see Who Framed Roger Rabbit? as a Fathers’ Day treat — and a tribute to Bob Hoskins (RIP). Maybe this isn’t the most inspiring photo (with all due respect to the person in it); but it brings to an end a full month of pictures that, with the exception of one Lake District shot, have all been taken in Hebden Bridge or Manchester, or points inbetween. But I’m off travelling again tomorrow.

On Todmorden station

Wednesday 11th June 2014, 4.15pm (day 1,021)

Tod station, 11/6/14

A sunny moment captured through the window of a train on the opposite platform. What I want to know is whether the cat is also intending to catch the imminent Manchester service.

Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade, 2014

Sunday 8th June 2014, 12.45pm (day 1,018)

Handmade Parade, 8/6/14

Welcome back to the Handmade Parade, pictured also in 2012 and 2013 — an amazing outpouring of creativity and effort. I just photograph it, taking 319 pictures today in one hour and five minutes. To pick one is not easy (others will go on my Flickr site — link at bottom); with the colours and costumes being almost a given I try to focus on the good faces, and then it’s a matter of hoping the focus is just right. I’m particularly happy with this shot because this was played for and got.
