The Lido at La Vallette

Sunday 12th August 2018, 3.35pm (day 2,544)

La Vallette Lido, 12/8/18

Lidos, or public outdoor swimming pools, were all the rage in the Victorian era, but many have fallen into disrepair. This one, just south of the town centre of St Peter Port, is apparently being restored and could reopen soon. It was a grey and drizzly day in Guernsey although the forecast for the rest of the week is pretty good. In the background, Castle Cornet, which has guarded the port here for 800 years or more, and on the horizon, the island of Herm.

Half-time break

Tuesday 7th August 2018, 7.50pm (day 2,539)

Half-time, Haslingden, 7/8/18

More football, OK, perhaps I am overdoing it. But today’s shot can also get in for its picturesque qualities. Half-time in the West Lancashire League at Haslingden St. Mary’s FC, although the players in yellow are the visitors, Fulwood: 2-0 up at this point, they go on to win 4-0, while the rest of us get distracted by the sun setting over the hills.

Angletarn Pikes summit

Monday 6th August 2018, 11.40am (day 2,538)

On Angletarn Pikes, 6/8/18

On the higher of the two summits of Angletarn Pikes, the gentleman seems determined to draw the attention of his wife towards the less interesting half of the view.

There’s something strange going on with this shot don’t you think? It almost looks artificial, like the two models are in a studio and the mountains are back projected. Brothers Water looks strange too, like all this is a collage I’ve pieced together and then stuck on a bit of tin foil in a deconstructionist kind of way.

Mars

Wednesday 1st August 2018, 11.35pm (day 2,533)

Mars, 1/8/13

In some ways, of course, this may be the dullest picture I have ever posted on here. But I still think it’s a fine thing that my new camera [*] makes its debut by crossing interplanetary space. And without a tripod, too; to prove the steadiness of my hand and that the Red Planet isn’t just an out-of-focus star, note Psi Capricornus (apparently) just to the left.

[*] A Canon Power Shot SX60.

Three have fun on Crummock Water

Saturday 7th July 2018, 11.25am (day 2,508)

Crummock Water, 7/7/18

Hard to find much to complain about today, photographically or otherwise. And certainly no need to take further shots of toilets.

Cold weather sky

Friday 15th June 2018, 6.40pm (day 2,486)

Cold weather sky, 15/6/18

With mare’s-tails spread all over the sky and a circumzenithal arc showing off the ice crystals in the upper atmosphere… I think the recent warm weather might be coming to an end. Still, that’s an English June for you.

Over the boulders

Tuesday 29th May 2018, 1.40pm (day 2,469)

The boulders of Ill Crag, 29/5/18

“Come on a walk up Scafell Pike, son. It’ll be fun. You can have the pleasure of attaining the highest point in England,” says I, a few weeks back. I’m sure there were points today when Joe cursed me for letting me talk him into this particular hike — particularly here on Ill Crag, one of the subsidiary peaks nearby, and the first outrageous excrescence of boulders into the journey. This picture can also be presented with the benefit of hindsight and knowing that in fact, there’s worse still to come before the summit — all 3,210 feet of it (978 metres) — is attained.

But he made it. And it was a beautiful day.

March of the giants

Thursday 24th May 2018, 8.55pm (day 2,464)

Pylon sunset, 24/5/18

Unorthodoxy in the route to and from work for the second day in a row — even more so today as a train strike and an unmissable commitment on campus meant I hired a car and drove in to work in Manchester for only the third time ever, and the first two of those were both in August 2005. But it was a nice day, and the views from the last legs of the drive, over the tops from Littleborough to Cragg Vale, provided some recompense.

View from Mickle Door, Crinkle Crags

Saturday 12th May 2018, 12.15pm (day 2,452)

View from Mickle Door, 12/5/18

On a day of ideal walking weather, the Lake District was not a place to go to for the solitude — at least, not the parts of it that I hung out in, namely Great Langdale and the 2816 feet (858m) summit of Crinkle Crags, one of Wainwright’s “Top SIx Fells”. But I cannot begrudge anyone else their enjoyment of the fine conditions today. We are just the same, after all.

Aberdour beach and the Firth of Forth

Monday 7th May 2018, 12.25pm (day 2,447)

Aberdour beach, 7/5/18

A glorious — and three-day — weekend continues with the chance to spend a Monday relaxing with our friends in Aberdour and exploring its stellar beaches: this one, known (erroneously) as Black Sands is particularly fine. This weekend has reminded me why I should come to Scotland more often.
