Accrington Market is closed

Tuesday 5th October 2025, 12.20pm (day 5,155)

Accrington market, 5/10/25

The weekend’s tour of non-glamorous Northern towns continues. Actually Accrington is a more pleasant place than you might imagine, with signs of civilisation…. Not in the market today, though, not on a Sunday. Day of rest and all that. Did you know that bricks made in Accrington were used in the foundations of the Empire State Building? Now you do.

Taking it easy

Friday 11th January 2019, 11.05am (day 2,696)

HB market, 11/1/19

I don’t want you to think I busted a gut today, either: although I did do work at home. It’s not a busy time for me. I’d say this is normal for January, but actually it isn’t: six years ago today, for example, I was flying over the Sahara on my way to Kenya. But in 2019 I’ve a couple more weeks at home yet, before there’s any real change of scene.

Market stalls

Wednesday 1st March 2017, 4.45pm (day 2,015)

Market stalls, 1/3/17

March 2017 is scheduled to be an eventful month for me: by the time it ends I will have gone to both Japan and the Arctic (north Norway), so there’ll hopefully be plenty of photographic inspiration. It didn’t start eventfully however — a quiet day working at home. The market in Hebden Bridge runs on Wednesdays and Thursdays, here the stalls have been cleared but remain up in readiness for tomorrow. Plenty of good lines on this shot — which may or may not be perpendicular to each other.

Tod market

Tuesday 1st December 2015, 2.45 pm (day 1,559)

Tod market 1/12/15

Todmorden market‘s second appearance on the blog — though I never seem to actually catch it open. Perhaps it’s just better this way.

Farmers’ market in the rain

Sunday 15th September 2013, 1.00pm (day 752)

Farmers market, 15/9/13

Very few people bothered today, on either side of the tables. Not surprised, though — the weather was dismal.

Todmorden market at night

Wednesday 14th March 2012, 7.00pm (day 202)

Todmorden market, 14/3/12

Little commentary to add to this one – just a nice scene I passed on the way home. I’m sure it would be a cheaper service to run if they turned the lights off when it was empty, though.
