Watching the game

Saturday 8th July 2023, 4.05pm (day 4,335)

Dog, Penicuik Athletic, 8/7/23

What better things are there to do on a Saturday than watch some footie? The dog may or may not agree but it looks interested enough. Taken at Penicuik Athletic FC, and Penicuik, just south of Edinburgh, thereby becomes the 435th different place to feature on here; expect a few more new locations to turn up over the next week…

Action at Ilkley

Saturday 10th December 2022, 4.15pm (day 4,125)

Ilkley Town, 10/12/22

This time of the year the sun is mostly gone by about 3.45pm and in low light — which includes floodlighting — my camera isn’t going to get any sharp action shots, certainly of football but to be honest even people jogging past the lens will be somewhat blurred. But I think I get away with this one – the impression is of action, the blurring does not really matter. The game was at Ilkley Town FC, the blue-and-yellow blurs scored two late goals to triumph over visitors AFC Blackpool 2-1.

Spectating

Tuesday 11th October 2022, 8.00pm (day 4,065)

I’m not the only one who does this random non-league football thing, you know. In fact this was a pleasant evening, and there are certainly worse things to do on a Tuesday. Taken at Hurst Cross, home of Ashton United FC, during tonight’s game against local rivals Curzon Ashton. This ground has been in continuous use since September 1884, making it one of the oldest football grounds in the world.

Watching the people watching the game

Saturday 14th May 2022, 2.25pm (day 3,915)

Lower Hopton FC, 14/5/22

On a glorious Saturday afternoon in May I personally can’t think of anything much better to do than sit down on the edge of a small field and watch people run around playing football. Or in the case of this shot, it’s more watching the people watching the football, as I like the variety of positions they adopt. The kid sat on top of the dugout stayed there for the entire match. Taken at Lower Hopton FC, whose battle to remain in the ‘Supreme’ division of the Yorkshire Amateur League was not harmed by coming back from 2-0 down to snatch a point against visitors Wortley. This was all a lot more fun than the tedious crap served up by the millionaires at Wembley later in the day, for sure.

Embrace the crowd

Saturday 17th April 2021, 4.35pm (day 3,523)

Crowd at Eagley FC, 17/4/21

I decided yesterday’s photo was a misrepresentation, so here is a definite example of a crowd. And if people hadn’t wanted to be there, they wouldn’t have been there.

Before anyone gets too obstreperous I will observe this is a long zoom taken down almost the full length of the football pitch. The vertical white posts are each about two meters apart. As we saw when all this kicked off a year ago, it’s quite possible to use a camera to create the impression of crowding where none exists. But it was still good to see at least 70 people at this match (an entertaining game at Eagley FC in Bolton). In any case, the sooner we start to feel close to one another again, the better.

Boxing Day entertainment

Wednesday 26th December 2018, 3.30pm (day 2,680)

Boxing Day entertainment, 26/12/18

In the UK Boxing Day (or St Stephen’s Day, or whatever) is traditionally a day for sport, and we were amongst 413 people enjoying the football at Clitheroe FC on a very mild and pleasant afternoon. So were these two — but their levels of enjoyment are less palpable.
