Rose hip

Saturday 22nd November 2025, 2.35pm (day 5,203)

Rose hip, 22/11/25

There have been a couple of exceptions — namely 2018, when I was in Germany, and 2021 on St Helena (and in 2019 I was about to go to Indonesia but not quite yet on my way) — but the 22nd November is not usually a date on which much happens. I find this a depressing, enervating time of year to be honest. Everything’s in decline yet we are still weeks from the turnaround point at the solstice. This rose hip (and feel free to correct me if I’ve got the botany wrong) is still putting in an effort, I guess, but most of the rest of nature has kinda given up. I know how it feels.

Homage to ‘Power Corruption and Lies'(or, random flowerpot)

Wednesday 18th June 2025, 3.50pm (day 5,046)

A still life. Those who know New Order may see my point with the title of this post. But it is just a random flowerpot, really.

Apples and rose hips

Friday 13th September 2024, 3.30pm (day 4,768)

Apples and hips, 13/9/24

The plums are eaten and gone, but there is still some free food to be found in the garden. The apples are not very big and a little tart but they will do fine in a crumble. I suppose I could have moved the prominent leaf before capturing this one but hey, it’s all part of the natural vibe.

Rose in beer garden

Thursday 27th June 2024, 5.15pm (day 4,690)

Rose in beer garden, 27/6/24

The whole flower-in-pub theme appeared a few days ago, but let’s return to it: it is, at least, a different pub, different flower, different day. Limited horizons this week but that ends today as 10 days off work now beckons, so let’s see what trouble I can get into.

Not a rose (by any other name)

Tuesday 29th August 2023, 12.05pm (day 4,387)

Not a rose, 29/8/23

How unexpected, I thought, as I saw this rose poking up, alone, from the undergrowth at the edge of the Memorial Garden. Then I saw it was not a rose. Plastic bag? A couple of bright red serviettes from one of the local eateries? To be honest I didn’t check. I took a photograph of it though.

Rose and awning

Monday 12th June 2023, 1.50pm (day 4,309)

Rose and awning, 12/6/23

A versatile flower, the rose is used for decoration, food, flavour, giving to people to indicate affection etc. Those thorns are damn prickly though. The one that has taken over one corner of our garden is an irritant rather than a decoration. This isn’t it, however; this one is to be found in Hebden Bridge town centre.

Is that pollen in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me

Friday 16th August 2013, 9.50am (day 722)

Rose, 16/8/13

Ahhhh, Nature. Whatever the species, even kingdom, the aesthetics of sex are essentially the same.
