Waiting it out on platform 5

Wednesday 14th March 2018, 10.50am (day 2,393)

Victoria, platform 5, 14/3/18

This blog isn’t intended to be political and it’s been a little while since I had cause to depict the lousy state of the local train service. I know this can be a default position for the commuter, that it’s always terrible, but really, Arriva Northern have surpassed themselves in recent months with overcrowding and cancellations. I am lucky – I can organise my day to avoid peak rush hours, on the whole, hence the timing of this shot. Many cannot and are forced to put up with the same crap every week day.

Much-ignored signage

Thursday 15th February 2018, 9.20am (day 2,366)

No entry, 15/2/18

Hey, I’m not morally censuring. A few seconds after taking this shot (oh look…. sunshine!), I also ignored the signage. Everybody does. Come off the footbridge leading to platforms 4-6 on Victoria station and you can ignore it, too.

Snow on the roof

Thursday 1st February 2018, 9.20am (day 2,352)

Victoria roof, 1/2/18

February dawns bright and clear, with snow on the ground on the Lancashire side of the Pennines, but not in Yorkshire — which is unusual. The light covering of white that was on Victoria station roof in the morning would not have taken long to melt off in the sunshine.

A new station

Thursday 25th January 2018, 3.35pm (day 2,345)

Oxford Rd station, 25/1/18

Since early December there has been a whole new version of our train service, extending — at least on paper — to Oxford Road station. This all makes my life mildly more convenient coming home on an afternoon, as long as I can bugger off no later than 4pm; in the morning it makes no difference at all, being quicker to walk between the two stations. For this, your friendly government magnanimously spent £85m on the Ordsall Chord development. Well, I’m sure it’s all part of some bigger plan somewhere. After all, it would be terrible to think that the people in charge of the country’s finances didn’t actually have a clue.

Robin at the station

Thursday 18th January 2018, 9.35am (day 2,338)

Robin at station, 18/1/18

Continued dim and gloomy light means this one isn’t going to win any nature photography plaudits but nevertheless, robins are hard birds not to like. Cute, colourful, unafraid of people, they hang out where we like to be — like this one at the railway station this morning. It would be nice if they would stay in one place a little longer, but I just about got the focus right here. I make this the fifth robin to appear on the blog. My favourite? This one, from 4th January 2017.

Gone to Liverpool (maybe)

Monday 6th November 2017, 11.15am (day 2,265)

Victoria bike, 6/11/17

Or Southport, or Bury, which are other towns named on the facade of Victoria station in Manchester and to where one can still catch a train…. unlike Fleetwood, Goole and other places where trains haven’t gone from here in a long time. Hope he/she locked their bike securely, wherever it was.

Freight train, Victoria station

Thursday 26th October 2017, 1.45pm (day 2,254)

Victoria freight, 26/10/17No rest for me despite an 11pm arrival home last night, it was off for a full day’s work, even if I did the second part of it at home. 13:48 departure from Victoria delayed a few minutes while this very long freight rumbled through platform 3b. This is just the very back end of it.

A prosaic way to mark Clare’s 41st birthday: many happy returns to her, as mentioned tonight, maybe on this date next year she should take over the blog for a day, as its title will apply…

Early start

Thursday 19th October 2017, 6.55am (day 2,247)

Early start, 19/10/17

First time I’ve pulled a duty on the 06:59 for a while. First time I’ve been at the station before sunrise in an even longer while. The world turns…

Boarding the London train

Tuesday 11th July 2017, 9.30am (day 2,147)

London train, 11/7/17

Another trip to London…. but just for the day. Platform 8, Leeds station, to which I returned approximately ten hours later. The first precisely timed shot for a while.

Sunny afternoon, Victoria station

Wednesday 31st May 2017, 3.40pm (day 2,106)

Sunny Victoria, 31/5/17

First trip into Manchester for nearly two weeks. Last week I stayed at home and worked, which was the easier option due to the closure of Victoria station. Half-above the station stands Manchester Arena, scene of what we could refer to as ‘The Events’ of Monday 22nd May but which one might also reasonably call ‘the slaughter of 22 people by a psychopath’.  *Sigh*. And I had decided to try not to mention it.
