The chemical plant

Sunday 1st September 2024, 2.50pm (day 4,756)

The area around Low Moor railway station, to the south of Bradford, is the most industrialised part of my local area. There’s plenty of photographic interest to be had within it, whether close-up or from more of a distance, like here. It’s nice that the windsock continues the diagonals of the cable and stairway, but its presence is somewhat ominous — and surely linked to the fact that Low Moor station is the only one I know where there are display boards warning of what to do if the alarms go off and the area needs to be evacuated. But it hasn’t happened…. yet.

Pioneer Village

Wednesday 19th June 2024, 8.10pm (day 4,682)

Pioneer Village, 19/6/24

‘Pioneer Village’ really is the name of this district, with the building on which the letters are sat being the Toronto Subway station of that name. But I doubt the pioneers, of whatever nation, who first explored the regions north of Lake Ontario quite anticipated their village would end up looking like this. Decent sunset, though.

View over Halifax

Sunday 16th January 2022, 1.15pm (day 3,797)

View from Norwood Green, 16/1/22

The hoped-for walk duly happened — leg 6 of the Calderdale Way was completed, with Clare, over four months after the last one. But we are getting round, and somewhere just before this shot was taken (from Norwood Green, a village on the outskirts of Halifax) we turned generally to the west and started heading back home. There are a couple more days’ walking to do before it’s finished, at some not-yet-determined future date.

March of the giants

Thursday 24th May 2018, 8.55pm (day 2,464)

Pylon sunset, 24/5/18

Unorthodoxy in the route to and from work for the second day in a row — even more so today as a train strike and an unmissable commitment on campus meant I hired a car and drove in to work in Manchester for only the third time ever, and the first two of those were both in August 2005. But it was a nice day, and the views from the last legs of the drive, over the tops from Littleborough to Cragg Vale, provided some recompense.

Power

Friday 4th November 2016, 8.25am (day 1,898)

Power, 4/11/16

Looked to the left between Littleborough and Smithy Bridge stations, on my train commute into Manchester, and went into a sudden spasm of photographic ecstasy. Definitely one of the better pictures I have ever taken from a train moving at full speed.

Pylon landscape

Sunday 26th February 2012, 2.30pm (day 185)

Pylon landscape, 26/2/12

Run a line of pylons through the Lake District and there would rightly be outrage, but though there will be purists who will not even concede this point, the moors to the south of Hebden Bridge are so bleak that at least these metal monsters make the landscape more interesting. I have no idea where these lines of towers come from, or where they march off to; they just stomp across the land for miles along the road from Cragg Vale to the M62 on Saddleworth Moor.

Today marks the start of the second six-month period of this blog – and thus we are at the halfway point. Yes folks, I am forty-two-and-a-half years old as of today. Because I am something of a statto, I feel obliged to share with you the information that:

  • of the 185 photos to appear on here so far, 87 have been taken in Hebden Bridge; 32 in Manchester; 11 in the Lake District; 9 in Moscow; 9 in Bergen; 4 in London; 4 in Morecambe; 3 each in Leeds, Helsinki, Amsterdam, and in unspecifiable locations from aeroplanes; 2 each in Brighton and Littleborough; and 1 each in Lancaster, Tampere, Haworth, Stockport, Wetherby, Dunsop Bridge, Halifax, Walsden, Whalley, Liverpool, York, over the Øresund and – above – near Ripponden.
  • Neck-and-neck in terms of the most popular hour for a photo are 11:something and 16:something, with 22 each, then 14:whatever, with 18. Only 3 photos have been taken before 7am, and only 8 at 8pm or later; no photos at all have yet emerged from the hour of 21:00 – 21:59, though three have been taken later than 10pm.

Anyway, so. I have as much to do as I have done so far. We’re halfway through. I’m still enjoying it: I’ll keep doing it if you’ll keep reading it.
