Navvy

Tuesday 13th January 2015, 4.20pm (day 1,237)

Navvy, 13/1/15

Egad, it’s cold and wintry at the moment — at least by British standards — but it won’t go the whole hog and snow, which would at least give something outside to photograph other than this chilly gloom. The ‘fire room’ at the Railway is one of the warmest places I know which is why many of us congregate there after doing whatever it is we’ve done in the day. Like Navvy here, a regular visitor.

Paying for lunch

Sunday 16th November 2014, 2.15pm (day 1,179)

Pub pay till, 16/11/14

So some feedback suggests that you guys might be missing the text captions on these daily posts…. Hmmm. I was enjoying letting the images take the load. What could I say to illuminate the ambiguity of this shot and/or all its little details? Why number 41? Why did someone feel it necessary to design a sign showing the potentially very obvious? (There have been a few signs lately. Maybe this means something, maybe it doesn’t.) Whose lunch? Where’s the payment? Those who know, know…

Closed pub, Grafton Street

Tuesday 4th November 2014, 1.10pm (day 1,167)

Bowling Green pub, 4/11/14

This pub sits right on the edge of the university campus. But obviously not in a well-frequented enough spot. This is my photography with the ‘social realist’ hat on.

Watching the 2:40 at Ascot

Saturday 4th October 2014, 2.45pm (day 1,136)

Watching the races, 4/10/14

Some pubs are football pubs but some devote their Saturday afternoons to the horse racing. We found ourselves in Keighley this afternoon and, after finishing our duties, as we do, gravitated to the nearest pub — with the bonus that this was about the first chance in my life that I had to sample the products of the Timothy Taylor brewery in the town of its origin. The Boltmakers’ Arms became the pub of choice — and very fine it was too.

The front room at the pub

Sunday 21st September 2014, 4.20pm (day 1,123)

Pub front_room, 21/9/14

Fifth day in a row in which I have gone no further from my house than a quarter-mile away. Third day in five in which the picture of the day has been a pub. Such has been my life since Wednesday morning. It’ll change tomorrow. At least the sun came out today, and we had something other than all the recent gray crap.
