Wembley FC mural

Saturday 2nd September 2023, 2.55pm (day 4,391)

Wembley FC mural, 2//9/23

Wembley FC do not play at Wembley Stadium — though you can see that from their Vale Farm ground about a mile away. Nevertheless, they give good art work, even if the subject matter, going on the dates, is a tragic one.

Mural by Red Chilli

Wednesday 21st June 2023, 12.40pm (day 4,318)

Red Chilli mural, 21/6/23

Another case of Someone Else’s Art feeding this blog. I assume this face does also belong to a real person; I wonder how models do actually feel about coming (literally) face-to-face with themselves now and again. I put her to the side of this shot because I also like the conjunction with the stuff in the restaurant window, and the pedestrian timed it well too. All seen on Grosvenor Street not far from my office on campus this lunchtime.

Mural, Cowdenbeath

Saturday 6th May 2023, 2.00pm (day 4,272)

Cowdenbeath mural, 6/5/23

Cowdenbeath, a little town in Fife, offered various entertainments as an excuse to break today’s journey up to Dundee. One that was unanticipated before I got there was a series of really excellent, and huge, murals that decorate the town centre. This one is remarkably good. Look at the sense of focus, and hence realism, that the artist has achieved. Those trucks look absolutely solid. Would that I could get things in focus like that, sometimes.

Mural on “Revolution”

Wednesday 15th June 2022, 9.05am (day 3,947)

Mural, Revolution, 15/6/22

Someone Else’s Art — but very fine it is. It doesn’t matter that her left eye is mostly replaced by the window, and the security camera totally fails to intrude, too. Great work. Sometimes even just a minor variation in one’s route to work brings new sights in view.

Darwen, Lancashire

Monday 2nd May 2022, 12 noon (day 3,903)

Darwen town centre, 2/5/22

My football habit does give me the chance to go exploring: that and the photo-blogging are all part of the same mix, really. I have been to Darwen, south of Blackburn, before but it didn’t make it onto here so this can be its debut. A former centre of textile manufacture, making paint is its main industry these days, and I guess the mural could represent one or both of these endeavours.

Doncaster mural

Monday 25th October 2021, 10.50am (day 3,714)

Doncaster mural, 25/10/21

I know I did other people’s art only a fortnight or so ago, in Toronto. But I’m doing it again. This mural, just outside Doncaster railway station, is magnificent — and so far as I can tell, absolutely the best-looking thing in the town. There should be more of this kind of thing. In fact, there is coming to be more of this kind of thing, and that’s good.

Toronto mural

Wednesday 13th October 2021, 10.00am (day 3,702)

Toronto mural, 13/10/21

There are many good murals around this city — and this one is particularly fine. No further comment necessary.

Maid Marian Way

Wednesday 4th August 2021, 8.55am (day 3,632)

Maid Marian Way, 4/8/21

Here’s 1960s town planning for you. Build a concrete monstrosity of a street in the centre of your city, with a car park on top of it, and name it after a female character from that city’s history who was alluring enough to appeal to its most dashing hero. Maid Marian’s appeal is at least hinted at by whomever decorated the wall, but that’s scant consolation.

Mural (no longer heron)

Friday 16th October 2020, 1.30pm (day 3,340)

I quite like the heron mural that occupied this spot until fairly recently; now it has become this. Possibly this blog is now the only record of how it used to look. I do quite like its successor too, but this photo is more of all the various quadrilaterals on the side of what used to be the Hole in the Wall pub and has been ‘under refurbishment’ for what seems like years now.

L. S. Banksy

Monday 10th February 2020, 7.55am (day 3,091)

L. S. Banksy, 10/2/20

Another early morning in Manchester. The difference in the light, bearing in mind the 45 minute gap from the time of Friday’s shot, shows the current clocking on time for the sun. I love the details on this shot, the graffiti and the print.
