The Detectorists

‘Detectorists’ = ‘people who head out and comb fields, beaches, toxic waste dumps etc. with metal detectors’. There was an agreeable TV series featuring these lovable rogues, I believe. Well, not these two perhaps.

Excellent day for photography today by the shores of Morecambe Bay. For the first time in ages I feel minded to add something to the Best of the Rest page as well as this shot. It’s certainly an attractive corner of this island, I’ll give it that.

Morecambe Bay, looking to the Lake District

The title of the shot is as much aspiration as description. Today I am in Morecambe. Tomorrow, I will be over in the Lake District, on the other side of the Bay; the fells forming the horizon are (left to right) Dow Crag, Grey Friar and Coniston Old Man. Let’s have a week off work, somewhere beautiful. That’s a decent aspiration….

The Midland Hotel

Midland Hotel, 30/10/16

The Midland was built in 1933 and is an Art Deco masterpiece, a beautiful and elegant building inside and out. For most of the time since I started coming to Morecambe when I met Clare 20 years ago, it stood empty and crumbling, but in 2008 was restored and reopened as a hotel and we were lucky enough to have stayed there last night as the final act in this week of celebrations for Clare’s 40th. The food was excellent too. If you’re ever in the area it’s well worth the patronage.

Rainy evening, Trafalgar Point

Trafalgar Point sticks out into Morecambe Bay, as that is where I reside this weekend for the final hurrah of the wife’s 40th birthday celebrations — this time round, with her family. The good weather has definitely receded, at least for now, and this shot could have been discarded because of the rain on the lens but in the end I decided it was all atmosphere. With tonight being the last day of British Summer Time, this will be the last evening it is remotely light at this hour until March.

Cartmel Sands, Cumbria

The UK government hate public transport, and have done so, passionately, since the 1950s when they realised that, regardless of the effects on the environment and society, they could make much more money taxing private motor vehicles. They are also the type of people who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

This picture is taken from the Cumbrian Coast rail line which I happen to think is as beautiful a railway line as exists anywhere in the world. Cartmel Sands are the estuary of the rivers Crake and Leven, which empty Coniston Water and Windermere into Morecambe Bay. Every time I go over the bridge here it looks different, some alteration in the configuration of light, tide and season that refreshes the scene constantly.

I would — and do — travel on this rail line simply to see these kinds of thing, there does not have to be a particular destination in mind. But my government would never see this kind of value. They willfully refuse to, in fact.

I’m glad I have set my life up in ways that get me round the Cumbrian coast rail line now and again, even on a damp Friday in January. This shot is taken from a moving train.

Salt marsh, Kents Bank, Cumbria

I worked yesterday, so walked today. This is my usual walking county — Cumbria — but so far away from my usual haunt that it’s outside the Lake District National Park, on the very edge of Morecambe Bay. Forty years ago this area was marked on the map as mud and sand, but changes in the currents around the Bay (caused by sea protection works in Morecambe, some say) have seen the sea retreat and leave these salt marshes. There were a few clouds around when I arrived at nearby Kents Bank railway station to start my walk a few minutes before taking this photo, but they soon burned off, and it was another very hot one today.

Walking the dogs on New Year’s morning

Last New Year’s Day I posted a pretty bad photo so here is my attempt to make up for it. A reasonably sunny, though breezy, morning to open 2013 and we, along with many others, took the air out by Morecambe Bay. The tide was in: for comparison, back in April I took this shot from more-or-less the same place. There is a very big tidal range here. The rocks are all part of the sea defences.

From England’s steepest and highest points yesterday to one of its flattest, lowest expanses: and all only a couple of dozen miles away. I like these little worm casts (though I am sure my parents will remind me of some long-buried beach holiday of my toddlerhood in which I was terrified of this kind of thing); a kind of natural sculpture. Or possibly just untidiness.

Morecambe, Christmas Eve

And so this is Christmas…. we effected a transfer to the in-laws’ this morning. They live in Morecambe, a strange place, quite run down in many ways but located on a slice of genuine physical beauty, the bay to which it gives its name. I’m happy with this pic but I suffered for it – this was taken into the teeth of a vicious gale.
