The Puppet Shop

Thursday 19th November 2015, 6.10pm (day 1,547)

Puppet shop, 19/11/15

As pictured at the Manchester Christmas market, which opened this week. He can consider it free advertising. This makes it 28 days in a row, or a full four weeks, with only pictures of Hebden Bridge and Manchester.

Conversation outside University Place

Thursday 12th November 2015, 3.10pm (day 1,540)

Outside University Place, 12/11/15

A shame about the signs on the door, which rather spoil the composition. So that’s 21 days in a row of shots only in Hebden Bridge or Manchester, breaking the record for this particular sequence; and seeing as the weather forecast for this weekend is pretty dreadful, thus no Lake District walk, the run will go on for a few more days yet.

Oxford Road

Tuesday 10th November 2015, 9.50am (day 1,538)

Oxford Road, 10/11/15

This is not my only walking route from Victoria to the office, but I head up and down it frequently enough. We are heading into that time of year where at the time I typically walk down it, the sunlight will be coming from straight ahead — not always easy to capture well but when it works, it’s great light. Today, the clouds helped; but there was still some flare, which led to spots of odd colour, hence the monochrome.

The building on the far left, by the way, is the Manchester Aquatics Centre, venue for the swimming and diving events of the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Sunset, Whitworth Street, Manchester

Friday 6th November 2015, 4.30pm (day 1,534)

Sunset, Whitworth Street, 6/11/15

After a week of gray, a spectacular sunset in Manchester city centre — I was far from being the only person trying to capture it tonight. One of those situations where if I’d had more time (instead of speed-walking the two miles from my office to Victoria station), I probably could have got a better shot.

The Fab Café?

Wednesday 4th November 2015, 9.25am (day 1,532)

Fab cafe, 4/11/15

Stats trivia…. the longest run of pictures on this blog, thus far, that were taken only in either Hebden Bridge or Manchester was 20 (15/4/12 – 4/5/12). Today is number 13 of the current run and with no plans to really go anywhere, by Wednesday next week the record will probably be broken. Time to find inspiration in very familiar places therefore. Like these wheelie bins on Princess Street on another grey and misty morning.

Grocer’s stall, Oxford Road

Tuesday 3rd November 2015, 4.20pm (day 1,531)

Veg stall, 3/11/15

This stall is a familiar sight on the walk back up Oxford Road into the city centre: it’s there in the same spot every weekday, and maybe weekends too. I like this shot because it’s the one I meant to take, only it’s gone monochrome to obscure the fact that the square behind the woman’s head was a totally incongruous bright purple on the initial version. It still looks a bit conspicuous here but overall the effect is much better in black and white.

Near the Mancunian Way

Friday 30th October 2015, 3.20pm (day 1,527)

Near Mancunian Way, 30/10/15

A dismal, rainy morning turned into quite a well-lit, mild and sunny afternoon, at least in Manchester. This leafy spot has appeared on the blog before — it is certainly one of central Manchester’s better locations if leaf-fall is your bag, despite being right next to the main arterial road that is the Mancunian Way.

Building Santa

Thursday 29th October 2015, 3.15pm (day 1,526)

Building Santa, 29/10/15

Those who have spent time in Manchester over the last few years may recognise here components of the disassembled Santa which graces Albert Square, outside the Town Hall, each year. It was being constructed today. But come on! It’s October still!!

Old BBC site, Manchester

Friday 9th October 2015, 9.40am (day 1,506)

Old BBC building, 9/10/15

Little seems to have happened to the site of the old BBC building since the structure was removed three years ago. My confident (but wholly ironic) prediction that it might get turned into eco-friendly affordable housing seems as far away as ever.

Under the Arndale Centre

Thursday 8th October 2015, 8.15am (day 1,505)

Arndale centre, 8/10/15

If this shot illustrates anything it at least proves that I do occasionally get my lazy butt into Manchester before 9am in the morning. And that at such times there, the light can be very good.
