The TV people are back

Monday 19th August 2024, 11.00am (day 4,743)

TV light by Albert

Following the success of Happy Valley and its evident impact on Hebden Bridge’s tourist trade/appeal to stag and hen parties the BBC have been persudaded to return, having taken over chunks of the town centre and at least two of its pubs over August. Although apparently, this time, HB might be pretending to be Todmorden. Whatever…

Pink lantern

Tuesday 26th March 2024, 3.50pm (day 4,597)

Pink lantern, 26/3/24

Whether this lantern ever produces light, I know not, but it looks quite good with the houses of Birchcliffe behind, and this is one of those shots that almost sits in its own frame. This will be an uneventful couple of weeks, but interest will pick up again in April, rest assured.

Chamber of (mild) torture

Tuesday 30th August 2022, 10.20am (day 4,023)

Dentist light, 30/8/22

This was the view looking up from the dentist’s chair in which I spent a not-entirely-enjoyable 40 minutes this morning. Could have been worse I suppose — and would have been, before convenient local anaesthetics were invented.

Filament

Wednesday 6th July 2022, 4.30pm (day 3,968)

Filament, 6/7/22

What beauty there is in this filament. As if it is a whole swirling galaxy of electric light. Worlds within worlds, within such an everyday thing.

Filming “Happy Valley”

Friday 21st January 2022, 3.35pm (day 3,802)

Filming crane, 21/1/22

Those of you who enjoyed the previous two series of Happy Valley (and the first, at least, was excellent), be assured that a third series is on the way; no one in Hebden Bridge could have failed to appreciate this today.

One of the things that was good about the series was that it was all filmed on location in Calderdale, and extremely authentic: people used the right local names for things, for example (like calling Todmorden “Tod”, which everyone does). As this light was shining up Hangingroyd Lane this afternoon I assume that Sgt. Cawood is still going to be depicted as living at no. 29, so probably the one little bit of fiction will be retained — in the series, she can always get a parking space right outside her house, in the centre of town. Yeah…. right.

Darkness falls

Wednesday 28th October 2020, 4.50pm (day 3,352)

Light at dusk, 28/10/20

I’ve given up wondering whether I’m being metaphorical or not. Fact is it’s that first week after the clocks go back, and dusk oppresses us an hour or more earlier than it did last week. Winter is coming. The Christmas lights are ready.

Home for abandoned chairs

Thursday 17th September 2020, 4.00pm (day 3,311)

Wicker chair, 17/9/20

The sign is unreadable thanks to the light shining through the wicker, but it says “Please take this chair if you would like it.”  And our Clare is the kind of person who gives home to abandoned household objects like this, which is why we have no room in our house to swing a cat.  Well, not any particularly big ones.

Television lights

Tuesday 2nd February 2016, 3.05pm (day 1,622)

Television light, 2/2/16

Don’t know what particular TV or movie production was being the latest to use Hebden Bridge as a location this afternoon, but someone was — these huge lights were blasting it out hours after sunset, even our house felt well-lit and it lies a quarter of a mile away.

Bunting, baby shower party

Sunday 30th June 2013, 6.40pm (day 675)

Baby shower bunting, 30/6/13

The weather isn’t exactly bad at the moment but the light is consistently flat and grey, hence the prevalence of interior shots at the moment. Little to add except to explain that I don’t normally frequent baby showers, but this one was held in a pub, so that drew me in.
