Whipping granny

Whipping granny, 21/5/25

At least, I assume it’s his granny. She was bearing it all stoically enough.

My granddad, in Egypt

Sunday 17th December 2023, 12.25pm (day 4,497)

Grandad's Egypt pictures, 17/12/23

From a fake old picture to some real ones. These were taken in around 1945 when my Granddad, Harold Whitworth — my father’s father — was serving in Egypt towards the end of World War 2. He’s the chap with the dapper moustache sat down next to the guy in the turban; and the one on the left of the other shot. (Mildly dubious it might be to dress as a native stereotype, but I have photos of myself doing much the same in Fiji.) Anyway, these are the kinds of family references that now seem obligatory when visiting my parents for the annual-Xmas get-together — last year it was the family tree; in 2023, the box of very old photos.

I don’t honestly remember Granddad ever saying much about his experiences in the war; he was certainly not one of those ex-soldiers who go on about it to anyone who will listen. In these pictures it all looks like an extended holiday, but I’m sure it wasn’t.

Joe and his Great-Gran

Saturday 19th March 2016, 3.15pm (day 1,668)

Joe’s great-grandmother — Clare’s gran, Alma Draper — is 90 today; happy birthday to her. That’s a lot of life. We attended the celebrations in Morecambe today. This picture shows them both standing up, incidentally — Joe is getting much taller, and Gran, well, she’s never been particularly tall.

Clare and her gran

Sunday 30th December 2012, 7.55pm (day 493)

Clare and Gran W, 30/12/12

On 30th December 1972, Carol and Dave – Clare’s parents, thus, my parents-in-law – were married. Which makes today their ruby (40th) wedding anniversary. At least according to family legend, the wedding was held in the winter so as not to interfere with the sea bass fishing season – because that’s the kind of guy Dave is. Perhaps it’s true; I certainly half-believe it.

Anyway, a very nice celebration was had by all, and I took a very large number of photos (300+ today); picking one was not easy but this is my choice. Clare’s gran (she has both, still: this is Dave’s mum) is quite frail these days and could only come to the party for a short time, but this is a nice photo to capture them both together.
