Jammin’

Monday 2nd September 2024, 7.50pm (day 4,757)

Four pounds of blackberries, all foraged from the roadsides within 200 yards of home, have just been combined with four pounds of sugar. Four pounds of sugar is a lot. But, an hour or so later, there were six jars of very nice jam ready to see us through the winter. Making jam may seem a terribly middle-class thing to do but it ain’t hard, y’know.

A tomato makes an effort

Tuesday 30th July 2024, 9.20am (day 4,723)

Ripening tomato, 30/7/24

So, at least a few of the tomato flowers (as pictured on May 23rd) have made an effort: although don’t imagine that this fruit is very big, nor that there are very many of them. This agriculture lark is not straightforward…

The loganberries’ annual shot

Thursday 11th July 2024, 3.05pm (day 4,704)

Loganberries, 12/7/24

Agricultural records (i.e. this blog) of the loganberry plants on our allotment date back to 2018. Lately they have started making regular appearances in July. They are welcome on the plot: they do produce edible, nice fruit and require almost no time and attention whatsoever in order to do this. The latter characteristic is a definite plus.

The avocado tree

Saturday 4th May 2024, 11.55am (day 4,636)

Avocados, 4/5/24

For various reasons St Helena is no agricultural paradise. Some types of fresh fruit and veg can be picked up fairly easily (tomatoes are currently easy to find, for example) but others are never seen. Potatoes, particularly. Ask for potatoes in a shop and you will either be laughed at or, as happened to me once, the shopkeeper will mutter, under his breath, “try me on Monday”, with a wink, as if you’ve asked for cocaine.

However, these beauties are currently growing happily on the tree in the courtyard outside my apartment. The landlord told me not to pick them off the tree, and I honestly haven’t. But they will, at some point, fall to the ground…. and at that point I consider them fair game.

The garden produces

Sunday 24th September 2023, 2.00pm (day 4,413)

Garden. produce, 24/9/23

It’s not just plums…. The apples are doing well this year, as are the leeks, and is that even a couple of beetroot poking up from the soil? Sure is. None of this makes a big dent in the food bill but it’s still satisfying.

Blackberry bounty

Saturday 9th September 2023, 2.10pm (day 4,398)

Blackberry bounty, 9/9/23

In all the fuss about the plums this year, we risk forgetting that these equally scrumptious beauties have also had a very fine summer. I just wish that come November, our supermarket shelves won’t be stuffed with the identical product, but shipped over from Guatemala.

What’s eating the plums

Tuesday 5th September 2023, 4.25pm (day 4,394)

Butterfly and plums, 4/9/23

We have reached an officially measured total of 21.2kg/46.6 pounds of harvested plums. This is the all-time record haul since it started bearing fruit about fourteen years ago (we forget exactly). I think the insects can have their fill now, I’m feeling plummed out.

Out foraging

Wednesday 9th August 2023, 2.25pm (day 4,367)

Blackberries and insect, 9/8/23

The insect was after the nectar. The flower wants its pollen moving on. I wanted the blackberries, the seeds of which will in turn be distributed. We all get something out of the transaction.

Loganberries

Tuesday 4th July 2023, 5.55pm (day 4,331)

Loganberries, 4/7/23

More plants, but there are a lot of them around at this time of year, particularly after the healthy mixture of sun and rain which has characterised the last three weeks or so. You were getting something from house or garden today in any case, as I never left the vicinity. But work is nearly done.

Plumlings

Friday 2nd June 2023, 3.45pm (day 4,299)

Plumlings, 2/6/23

Another one of those recurrent, annual subjects. Our plum tree definitely has years off — and 2022 was one — but this year there’s going to be a decent crop. Previously I have referred to these as plumlets but for some reason ‘plumlings’ came to mind this time round, which I feel is definitive.
