Worrying, though slightly out of date warning

Thursday 27th November 2025, 6.40pm (day 5,208)

Hitch-Hikers' Guide warning, 27/11/25

I know I said yesterday that the weather was coming in, but this is ridiculous…. Behold, though, the opening frames of a certain 1980s TV classic, watched in its entirety tonight. Apart from Zaphod Beeblebrox, who adds almost nothing to it, it’s still funny and clever. There’s absolutely no plot, though.

The great Movie Sort of 2025

Friday 24th October 2025, 3.35pm (day 5,174)

Movie reorganisation, 24/10/25

Maybe fifteen years ago these were in some kind of alphabetical order and general state of organisation but like molecules in a viscous liquid, they slowly rearranged themselves over time. Returning them to their original state of order has been a days-long job, only finished as I post this (Sunday morning). And it took all that time to find L. A. Confidential (which is what prompted the Sort Out in the first place).

Double bill (with Renton and Sick Boy)

Friday 22nd December 2023, 3.25pm (day 4,502)

Trainspotting, 22/12/23

For the last few weeks things have been very uneventful thanks mainly to lots of work plus bad weather. Today was the first day of my Christmas break — but we still had the bad weather, and mainly for that reason, it remained uneventful. But I can sit on the bed and watch DVD double bills like this in mid-afternoon and not feel guilty. In the background, Sick Boy delivers his speech about ‘first you’ve got it, then you’ve lost it’ while Renton looks out for air rifle prey. You’ve seen Trainspotting, right?

How to rule the world

Friday 13th January 2022, 2.45pm (day 4,159)

DVD stall and boot, 13/1/23

Second consecutive shot taken at the outdoor market, but hey. The guy on the DVD and CD stall takes a casual attitude towards his merchandise. One can either rule the world by wearing the shoes… or, presumably, get hints by watching the various Marvel movies which all seem to be based around much the same theme.

Friday market, DVD stall

Friday 8th April 2022, 1.35pm (day 3,879)

DVDs at market, 8/4/22

I continue to not get out: this is the 9th of the last 12 pictures to be taken in Hebden Bridge and the coming weekend ain’t gonna see me explore the world much either. Today, the stall full of digital info (DVDs, CDs) at least offered a new perspective on the Friday market of which it is a part. No purchase today though: a quick review suggests that any of these I might be interested in watching, I already own (Ted, Black Swan, Gravity and I am Legend — happy hunting)…

Concept for a movie mash-up

Wednesday 3rd June 2020, 6.30pm (day 3,205)

Alien Shogun, 3/6/20

A deeply dull day. By the evening I was reduced to casting my eye around the randomly organised piles of DVDs around the place and playing mash-up games, cross-fertilising. I’d pitch this one to Hollywood, but probably someone has already done a screenplay.

A double bill (in preparation?)

Thursday 12th March 2020, 1.30pm (day 3,122)

Shining double bill, 12/3/20

In case it’s not apparent, I’ve not been at work this week. This is not for virus-related reasons. I have no reason to suspect that I or anyone I’ve been in close contact with recently has become part of the 2020 media event of the year. But like most people, I am anticipating a period of time in the (possibly near) future where I have a couple of weeks left to my own devices, so no harm in getting some rehearsal done. I did bugger all today — except for making food, and getting through this double bill.

And for what it’s worth, I do think Doctor Sleep was a pretty worthy sequel to a classic movie, though whether Kubrick would have approved, I think probably not.

“The Handmaid’s Tale”

Tuesday 25th June 2019, 8.55pm (day 2,861)

Handmaids tale, 25/6/19

Could John Logie Baird have foreseen ‘the box set’, I wonder. Perhaps so — after all it’s not radically removed from the novel as Dickens wrote it. With his exams finished, Joe here adopts a position he’ll doubtless choose to remain in all summer, although we’re working on it. Meanwhile, Clare knits to relieve the excitement.

Alphabetising

Sunday 1st April 2018, 2.00pm (day 2,411)

Movie pile, 1/4/18

I might be off work but there’s still lots of terribly important jobs to do around the house. Like deal with the chaos that the 300 or so DVDs and VHS tapes have descended into down the years. Two hours saw it done, with only one major ‘collapse’ moment. Here, inspect a couple of the Ms…
