Photographing the old bridge

Saturday 18th January 2014, 3.55pm (day 877)

Photographing bridge, 18/1/14

I know this is rather over-exposed and otherwise suspect technically and in terms of composition (you can’t see the bridge properly) — but I still think it’s OK. Taken on Old Gate, Hebden Bridge, this afternoon.

The River Calder, near Hebden Bridge station

Tuesday 10th December 2013, 8.40am (day 838)

River Calder, 10/12/13

Another beautiful morning in a long run of good weather (proving the idiotic newspapers wrong with their predictions of a dire early winter). The bridge carries Mayroyd Lane over the river Calder, near the railway station. Another oft-passed scene, but it has managed not to appear thus far on the blog.

Park steps and canal bridge number 16A

Saturday 28th September 2013, 2.30pm (day 765)

Park steps, 28/9/13

The bridge extends over the Rochdale Canal, and links Hebden Bridge town centre (to the right) with Calder Holmes Park. Today was another glorious day, how much longer can this summer last?

Sotrabrua

Thursday 6th June 2013, 8.45pm (day 651)

Sotrabrua, 6/6/13

‘Brua’ is Norwegian for ‘bridge’. This bridge connects the mainland with the island of Sotra, near Bergen. We sailed under it today on the Statsraad Lehmkuhl, a large ship which I occupied with about 300 (mostly drunk) Norwegians, an ambiguous way to spend one’s evening, but the views were good.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Sunday 31st March 2013, 4.25pm (day 584)

Sydney Harbour Bridge, 31/3/13

I know I did the ‘crossing a bridge’ thing a few days ago, but no offense to Brisbane, this is one of the world’s truly great bridges so needed to be shown on here (and I like the various lattices on the shot). And it is a very impressive piece of engineering. Eighty years old now but I am sure it will still be looking as good into the next century (though by then, who knows, it might be called the Hancock Westpac News International Bridge or something like that).

Crossing the William Jolly Bridge, Brisbane

Tuesday 26th March 2013, 12.40pm (day 579)

William Jolly bridge, 26/3/13

Sometimes you see a shot coming just in time to get it lined up, focused and taken. Played for and got. I’m very happy with this one.

Great tit, Nyborg beach

Wednesday 9th May 2012, 8.05pm (day 258)

Great tit, Nyborg, 9/5/12

So here I am in Denmark, the 6th country to feature on this blog so far – the others being, in order, UK, Finland, Norway, Russia and the Netherlands. (There will be at least one more this year, as I’m off to the US in July.)

The bridge in the background is called the Størebaeltsbroen (Great Belt Bridge) and it links the islands of Sjaelland and Fyn; I came over it earlier on a train from Copehagen airport to Nyborg. There’s not much to do in Nyborg, so this evening I just went for a walk on the beach and photographed great tits. As one does, on beaches.

Hoge Brug, Maastricht

Wednesday 4th April 2012, 10.10am

Hoge brug, 4/4/12

Most of the Netherlands didn’t even exist until the 12th century, and Maastricht (from the Roman Mosae Trajectum) is the only genuinely venerable city in the country, having grown around crossing points over the river Maas (or Meuse). And here is the newest, the Hoge Brug or ‘High Bridge’. As you can see, it was something of a grey and dull morning, though not as bad as at home, where the early summer of two weeks ago has reverted to snow. Glad I’m away for a little while.
