Chaffinch

Friday 23rd December 2016, 10.55am (day 1,947)

Chaffinch, 23/12/16

While trying not to repeat myself on this blog, sometimes the locations and subject matter will be the same… thus this is much the same as this shot on Boxing Day 2013, poked through the window of my in-laws’ front room. But it doesn’t matter, this shot has a movement to it that I like, despite the black pole separating it into two parts.

Two swans

Monday 12th December 2016, 12.20pm (day 1,936)

Two swans, 3/8/16

Time for my annual trip down to Rose Bruford College in Sidcup, Kent, where I sit on an exam board for reasons lost in the mists of history. But I don’t mind going down, and it’s always good for a photo opportunity thanks to being located in the middle of the very pretty Lamorbey Park, the natural life of which has graced this blog before (like the parakeets, and the fly agaric). So here’s some more.

Ducks on patrol

Monday 5th December 2016, 3.30pm (day 1,929)

Ducks on patrol, 5/12/16

There seemed to be a lot of ducks around this afternoon, including this line of at least 15 in a row here (this is only part of the posse). Then again there were a lot of pigeons around too. Perhaps there has been an escalation in the ongoing Hebden Bridge pigeon-duck conflict. These guys certainly look extra-attentive.

Duck on the canal

Sunday 25th September 2016, 2.30pm (day 1,858)

Duck on canal, 25/9/16

I can’t believe there’s anyone who would wish ill will on ducks as a species. They aren’t aggressive, they don’t crap on your head, they’re good-looking and they pose very readily for the camera. What’s not to like?

By Hebden Water

Monday 29th August 2016, 6.05pm (day 1,831)

By Hebden Water, 29/8/16

Quite a Hebden-bound period of the blog — in the 20 days since we got back from North Wales, 13 shots have been here (and five of the rest in Manchester). Not so bad I guess but it’s time to get out a bit more. Still, I feel happy that the period signs off with a good shot, this duck and the evening light came together just so — and here’s a sign of where lens flare is integral to what I wanted from the picture.

Contact

Sunday 14th August 2016, 4.55pm (day 1,816)

Biker and pigeon, 14/8/16

Exactly what this biker and this pigeon were finding to talk about this afternoon by the Hebden old bridge, I have no idea — but there is clearly some communication here.

Pigeon couple

Sunday 12th June 2016, 10.40am (day 1,753)

Pigeon couple, 12/6/16

Slightly unsatisfactory because the head of the one in front is a little out of focus — probably it was moving for a peck when I pressed the shutter. Otherwise I like this photo — the graffiti in the background sets them off quite well I think. And I like the way the one in the rear is clearly fluffing up its ruff and giving me the big ‘piss off’ message.

Humph the Hebden Heron

Wednesday 25th May 2016, 8.25am (day 1,735)

Humph the heron, 25/5/16

On a grey day spent entirely working at home it’s always helpful for the photography when one of the local herons turns up in the Hebden Water just below my house. They are not particularly willing models — this one saw me a few seconds after I got this shot and flew off — perhaps that explains why it looks a bit rueful here, its neck tucked in, shoulders hunched. That’s why I’m calling it “Humph”, I can imagine that coming out of its mouth in a speech bubble.

Out for a walk, Central London

Saturday 30th April 2016, 12.15pm (day 1,710)

Goose in London, 30/4/16

This was an urban animal if ever I’ve seen one, striding out wholly purposefully this lunchtime along a busy street. I know the composition of this shot could be better — getting rid of the post behind the goose would have improved it for a start — but some shots you only really get one chance to capture.
