Hammock/web

Sunday 9th July 2017, 1.25pm (day 2,145)

Hammock/web, 9/7/17

Continuing to clear the allotment, I find this cobweb behind the most concealed of our collection of water butts. I like its dappling by sunlight and the way that tiny flower has fallen onto and nestled into it, pushing down delicately, like it’s a meniscus or the most fragile of hammocks one can imagine.

Joe and the hedge

Saturday 8th July 2017, 3.10pm (day 2,144)

Joe in hedge, 8/7/17As predicted on Thursday, the weekend is seeing a family effort with manual labour on the allotment. Joe is contributing his bit, having discovered power tools (namely the hedge trimmer), although this photo doesn’t really reflect this. It’s interesting to compare this photo with another one of him in a hedge, taken in January 2012; that’s what adolescence does to you (visually anyway).

Allotment flower

Thursday 6th July 2017, 6.00pm (day 2,142)

Allotment flower, 6/7/17

The garden is a riot of vegetation; only most of it is growing in places it shouldn’t, the consequence of a month of neglect. A weekend of agricultural labour looms. Attractive as it is this unidentified plant will be categorised as weed; its days are numbered.

Bumblebee

Saturday 4th March 2017, 1.30pm (day 2,018)

Bumblebee, 4/3/17

With due respect to Joe, whose 14th birthday it is today, this had to be today’s shot. Most of all I like the capture of the exquisitely delicate grip it has on the petal. There was just this one, half-hour burst of sunlight today, but it augured well for the rest of spring.

Robin

Wednesday 4th January 2017, 1.35pm (day 1,959)

Robin, 4/1/17

Hint: if really struggling to find a picture for the day — go sit in the allotment for ten minutes and wait for a robin to turn up and flirt with the camera…

Leeks in the garden

Saturday 12th November 2016, 10.45am (day 1,906)

Leek leaves, 12/11/16

The leeks have grown way better this year than in any previous year. We could say it’s the good weather — and it continues to be mild and pleasant, Wednesday’s sprinkling of snow notwithstanding — but actually I reckon it’s the discovery of ‘Baby Bio’ fertiliser. Which probably means these no longer count as ‘organic’, but what the hell, the one we ate this evening was very tasty. Not that you eat these bits of the plant, however.

Bee on the allotment

Tuesday 12th July 2016, 4.25pm (day 1,783)

Bee on allotment, 12/7/16Some creatures, like birds, seem in my experience to not like having cameras shoved in their faces. But insects don’t generally mind. The problem with capturing them is that they don’t stay in one place for very long. My technique largely involves setting the shutter to continuous capture then hoping the auto-focus does the work. I like this shot, though — also because of the overdwellings captured in the background, very Hebden Bridge.

Joe does very little

Sunday 22nd May 2016, 1.30pm (day 1,732)

Joe chillin, 22/5/16

Not every day will be exciting, eventful or photogenic — but I’ve come to realise that does not matter. This shot epitomises today — a pleasant Sunday spent doing not very much, and I feel we are all the better for it.

The next allotment

Sunday 19th January 2014, 2.50pm (day 878)

Allotment, 19/1/14

Glorious afternoon today, with sunlight streaming onto the allotments in late afternoon. Our neighbours (garden-wise) are much more organised than us. The green netting is evidence of that alone, but look — they have poultry. Why don’t we have poultry?

Thursday 2nd January 2014, 12 noon (day 861)

Slayed hedge, 2/1/14

I’m still off work, still not much going on so only everyday scenes to work with, and I know that even then this isn’t a great photo. However, it does document the devastation wreaked on the hedge that runs between our garden (allotment) and the path next to it. It needed doing but still…
