Rainy day

Friday 25th May 2018, 5.30pm (day 2,465)

Rain on bench, 25/5/18

Not an eventful day, and it won’t be an eventful weekend. Rain fell for the first time in three weeks, but it was of the light, refreshing kind that the plants needed before everything begun withering away. No sitting outside the pub this evening, however.

Zagreb cathedral

Tuesday 15th May 2018, 5.55pm (day 2,455)

Zagreb cathedral, 15/5/18

Sat in a room all day listening to people talk, so not the most exciting day photographically. But the cathedral in Zagreb is an imposing presence so gave me something more interesting to point my camera at. Rebuilt in the late 19th century after the old one was damaged in an earthquake.

Fallen blossoms

Friday 11th May 2018, 8.30am (day 2,451)

Fallen blossoms, 11/5/18

They’re very pink, but very ephemeral, the cherry blossoms. Maybe that’s why the Japanese like them so much, it matches their general aesthetic.

Gargoyle spit

Thursday 10th May 2018, 8.20am (day 2,450)

Gargoyle spit, 10/5/18

Who first came up with the concept of a gargoyle, I wonder? Take what is, in essence, a piece of guttering, and wrap a little monster face around it? Someone must have thought of this first, back in antiquity, and the idea caught on. This one graces the fountain in Albert Square, Manchester, and caught the light quite well on this sunny morning.

Big blue brolly

Friday 27th April 2018, 1.05pm (day 2,437)

Big blue brolly, 27/4/18

The defining feature of the day…  and the last couple, to be honest…. rain. Persistent, grey, cold. But what the hell, it’s the weekend.

69ºN

Wednesday 25th April 2018, 6.00pm (day 2,435)

Tromsø harbour, 25/4/18

At 69ºN, the world’s northernmost city provides boats, sea, birds, snow…. all that jazz. My last day in Tromsø. Hopefully, not the last of all, though as of yet I do not know when I will be back…

The usual suspects

Friday 20th April 2018, 6.30pm (day 2,430)

Outside Railway, 20/4/18

As it was on Wednesday, so it was tonight. April 2018 in the UK skipped over spring entirely and went from winter to high summer. A Friday evening, the sun was out, the usual suspects were in attendance.

Stone grinding

Thursday 19th April 2018, 11.05am (day 2,429)

Angle ginder, 16/4/18

A warm, sunny day: though those who were enjoying a cup of tea on the terrace outside the Old Gate pub had a rather dustier few minutes than they might otherwise have had, thanks to this guy. Dust and sun — always good for a photo, though.

Attack of the giant bees

Tuesday 17th April 2018, 8.25am (day 2,427)

Bee mural, 17/4/18

The bees know what we’re doing… and they’re very unhappy.

Or maybe it’s a mural on the side of the New Union. Whatever…

View from my hotel room, Ljubljana

Thursday 12th April 2018, 9.20am (day 2,422)

Ljubljana, 12/4/18

Having finally got to my destination late last night, this was the view that awaited from my room in the morning. Not that it lasted long — around twenty minutes later, clouds descended, the mountains disappeared and it hasn’t stopped raining since.

Beyond its rather damp weather, though (which is apparently normal for this time of year), Ljubljana is certainly very pretty, and — especially for a capital city — very small, only just over 250,000 people. So Slovenia becomes a new country for the blog, though not for me, as I was here once before, in 2003. The mountains in the background (the Polhograjski Dolomiti) are basically the easternmost extension of the Alps.
