Maggie’s hair

Friday 30th June 2023, 6.15pm (day 4,327)

With 17 of its photos taken in Hebden Bridge, plus one a mile down the road in Mytholmroyd, and then seven more in Manchester: June 2023 has not been an eventful month. Only the trip to the Lake District got me out anywhere in particular. I could embrace the local and familiar of course, but in truth it’s pretty boring at the moment. Anyway, July will be different, at least after the first week. In the meantime, here’s Maggie’s hair, which I do think is quite cool. And I like the way this shot has come out, like it might be a pastel drawing perhaps.

Paddy in the alley

Friday 23rd June 2023, 5.20pm (day 4,320)

Paddy in alley, 23/6/23

Another less-than-exciting week ends with a photograph of similar sort. Life is scheduled to liven up in July but in the meantime, here we still are, Hebden Bridge on a quiet Friday post-work afternoon. Going monochrome helps the interest level a little, perhaps.

Drinking game

Wednesday 31st May 2023, 6.55pm (day 4,297)

Drinking game, 31/5/23

I wasn’t participating, just documenting. And out celebrating having finished the end of the latest bout of marking.

No comments to add to this one. Just a portrait of a friend.

Mark in his office

Thursday 4th May 2023, 10.10am (day 4,270)

Mark in office, 4/5/23

Another photo of a pack member — in a sense. Mark is one of the colleagues with whom I work most closely. We were recording a podcast this morning, hence the microphone.

Gus and Bille outside

Monday 27th March 2023, 5.05pm (day 4,322)

Gus and Bille outside, 27/3/23

This amount of light, sunshine and relative warmth at 5pm are definite signs of spring. The equinox is past us, the nights are only getting longer. Not that Gus looks all that happy about it.

Independent thought

Friday 24th March 2023, 12.05pm (day 4,229)

DMIL students, 24/3/23

I think I might finally have provoked the students into some independent thinking. They were talking about something, anyway.

Frida keeps me company

Thursday 16th February 2023, 8.30pm (day 4,193)

Frida Kahlo, 16/2/23

This week Clare has also been away, and remains there until the weekend. Back home I did nothing other than work at home and was close to having to put up something lousy on here, until later on, I looked over to the wife’s empty side of the bed and saw Frida Kahlo looking at me. Well, sort of.

Pedro tells us who he is

Thursday 26th January 2023, 6.55pm (day 4,172)

Pedro speaking, 26/1/23

It’s not actually the case that I came all the way back to St Helena simply to give a 15-minute presentation at this event, but it did, at least, strongly influence the timing of my visit. So let’s depict it as today’s post. My fellow speaker Pedro was here as a ‘digital nomad’ or ‘anywhere worker’, of the sort that the island would like to attract more of, once the new cable comes on line — an event that seems to have been forever just around the corner, but is apparently due to happen in March.

My hosts: Gareth and Moonlight

Sunday 22nd January 2023, 9.50am (day 4,168)

Gareth and Moonlight, 22/1/23

After booking the second set of flights to and from St Helena, and a couple of airport hotels, the travel budget was well and truly spent: there is literally £5 left of the £5,000 we were granted back in 2021 to do this project. So over the next two weeks I am crashing with these two good individuals, Mr. Gareth Drabble and Moonlight the cat, to whom I must defer. The guitar case is representative of both of them too: Gareth plays. Moonlight sleeps in it sometimes.
