The Thames at Hurley Lock

Sunday 27th October 2024, 1.25pm (day 4,812)

Cormorant and yacht, 27/10/24

Though we have been staying in London over the weekend, this part of the Thames is further upstream, just past Marlow, where the river forms the Buckinghamshire/Berkshire border for a while. I am very happy with this shot, as it turned out just as was hoped when I pressed the shutter. It seems to sum up two things about the Thames at this point — the wildlife and natural qualities are pretty good, and there’s certainly a lot of blatant displays of wealth around.

Portsmouth Harbour

Saturday 29th June 2024, 4.25pm (day 4,692)

Portsmouth harbour, 29/6/24

It’s our silver wedding anniversary this week. “Take me overseas!” the wife demanded, so I said, ‘sure’, and we have headed to the Isle of Wight. Well, you have to cross the sea to get there: starting with Portsmouth Harbour, pictured.

Thursday 20th July 2023, 4.50pm (day 4,347)

Yacht on Ullswater, 20/7/23

There are many worse ways, and places, to spend a Thursday. Taken from the Howtown to Pooley Bridge ‘pleasure steamer’ service, following a good walk up Place Fell; soon to be duly recorded on the Wainwrights blog.

Ullswater

Saturday 21st July 2018, 10.45am (day 2,522)

Ullswater, 21/7/18

While the very warm and sunny weather seems to have come to an end, it was still a fine day for messing around in the Lake District.

I assume, incidentally, that one of the two boats is at least thinking of heading to the island to retrieve the people seen thereon. If not, it was quite a swim to the shore from there.

On the Tagus

Saturday 30th July 2016, 2.40pm (day 1,801)

On the Tagus, 30/7/16

The River Tagus (in Portuguese, Rio Tejo) rises in Spain and flows west, splitting Portugal in half as it heads for the Atlantic. A few miles from the ocean, the estuary becomes very broad, but then narrows again, making an excellent natural harbour and explaining why there has been a city here since antiquity. In the background of this shot is the Torre de Belém, one of Lisbon’s most famous buildings.
