Leaves on the wonky steps

Thursday 26th October 2023, 3.05pm (day 4,445)

Leaves on wonky steps, 26/10/23

Autumn has hit in Manchester too, of course. These steps are to be found on Princess Street, as one arrives in Manchester city centre on the walk back from work (my walk, anyway). I think of them as the wonky steps because they are, aren’t they? Why those slopes or mini-ramps are present I have no idea. Accessibility-wise they would only take, say, a pram or bike up to the first platform, with three-quarters of the steps left to go after that. Maybe the builders were just having a creative moment back in the 1970s.

Welcome Week, in the rain

Tuesday 19th September 2023, 11.45am (day 4,408)

Marquee in rain, 19/9/23

It’s the first week of the semester, so the following things traditionally appear: lots more people (students); a collection of marquees with various AV equipment and heaters; and rain. It always seems to rain in Welcome week, year in, year out.

Dina speaks

Wednesday 13th September 2023, 10.10am (day 4,402)

Dina presenting, 13/9/23

Dina was last seen in Toronto in October 2021 and, as part of a project which has been (so far) a wholly positive development but with which I won’t bore you here, has been visiting Manchester this week. Other than myself, Clare and Joe this makes her only the second person to appear on this blog in two different countries and the first on two different continents.

Filming on campus

Wednesday 30th August 2023, 11.55am (day 4,388)

Campus is not exactly an over-used resource at this time of year but there were some signs of life today. And at least the sun put in an appearance, although whatever these guys were planning they still felt they needed additional illumination, and it’s the apparently floating light that offers this shot enough appeal to make it today’s choice.

The unwanted chair

Wednesday 2nd August 2023, 12.10pm (day 4,360)

Office chair outside, 2/8/23

Campus is hardly the most exciting, nor populated, place at this time of year — somehow this object symbolises this. Or maybe it’s begun its summer migration, and got beached on the shingle. A boring shot I know, but this was a day in which all the photos I took seemed to be crap. If the sun would shine, it might help.

Lavender on campus

Monday 3rd July 2023, 8.15am (day 4,330)

Lavender, 3/7/23

An early start on campus but it’s my last day there for a little while. This picture gets in today more for the pattern in the background than the plants themselves: these are tiles on the ground but perhaps they could be particularly regular clouds.

Friday bell

Friday 16th June 2023, 2.30pm (day 4,313)

Smiley bell, 16/6/23

Friday afternoon, and it’s been a six-day working week. But the next time this bell dings, I can go home. And I am the one responsible for dinging it this time round. I’ll wait until the appointed time, though.

Lunch in the courtyard

Tuesday 13th June 2023, 12.35pm (day 4,310)

EWB courtyard, 13/6/23

Too nice a day to have lunch sat inside, and a few minutes after I made this decision this group joined me in the courtyard. This space has appeared on here several times before, and as it’s still not exactly easy to work out how to get in it, this is as many people as I’ve ever seen using it at one time.

Louis waits for our meeting

Tuesday 6th June 2023, 2.05pm (day 4,303)

On the basis that it was going to be warm enough to sit outside, colleague Louis stood by the exit out to the courtyard. However, today was about 10º cooler than it’s been lately — so we met inside in any case. I was running a couple of minutes late. But I did see him down there, patiently waiting.

The foyer

Friday 19th May 2023, 3.10pm (day 4,285)

EWB foyer, 19/5/23

I said on Tuesday that campus was busying up. I withdraw that assessment after today’s visit, on which I reckoned I might have been the only member of uni staff in the whole Ellen Wilkinson Building that turned up today. And I only really did that for the step count. I have worked (occasionally) in the EWB for coming up to 18 years now, and it does not ever get much more visually interesting than this.
