Further intimations of autumn

Tuesday 2nd September 2025, 5.40pm (day 5,122)

Leaf and knot, 2/9/25

It’s only the second day of September but the kids have started back at school, it is much cooler and damper than it was, and there’s this general feeling of decline (and I don’t even mean in political terms, though we’ve certainly got that too). Autumn is upon us, I fear. Well, let’s make the most of it.

Ladybird on table

Sunday 20th October 2024, 3.35pm (day 4,805)

Ladybird, 20/10/24

It’s just a ladybird, off for a walk. They can fly, they just seem to prefer walking. Another shot used mainly because the focus came out right, and the shot therefore ended up as intended.

Rain, is what it is

Tuesday 4th June 2024, 4.15pm (day 4,667)

Rain and road, 4/6/24

I still have one walk left to do in my Lake District project and today might have been a day to go — but no. Good weather in 2024 has been at a premium. And so, that particular milestone will have to wait another three weeks at least.

Love shack

Wednesday 29th September 2021, 5.10pm (day 3,688)

Love Shack, 29/9/21

I didn’t plan it this way but this is turning into a very uneventful week, spent mostly at home. It’s lockdown all over again, except the pubs are open. Including this secluded little spot at the back of the Railway, unoccupied at this point in time.

Table in Nightjar

Thursday 23rd September 2021, 4.00pm (day 3,682)

Table in Nightjar, 23/9/21

Work, at the moment, consists of me banging my head against various Kafkaesque brick walls (Covid has infected the bureaucratic mindset far more profoundly than it has our physiology, and to more danaging effect) until I can’t stand it any more on any given day and need a drink. Today that point was reached about 3.50pm. Ten minutes later I was admiring the woodiness, almost meatiness, of the table in Nightjar at which I drank my first pint of the day.

Sitting out in the rain

Wednesday 30th September 2020, 5.25pm (day 3,324)

Table in rain, 30/9/20

A foul, miserable day of weather that matched the general mood.  September sun has just about sustained the local pubs, but once it stops being very agreeable to sit outside — as it definitely was today — then they will slowly rot away and die, like most other things that bring fun into our lives, presently.
