Recycling as artwork

Thursday 20th February 2025, 6.30pm (day 4,928)

Phone tableau, 20/2/25

Over the last two days I failed to mention my destination, which is Dubai — I will be here until Monday afternoon. Before returning home I may try to depict an urban scene, but it’s not a particularly photogenic place, in my opinion. Tall buildings, roads, flyovers. The Persian Gulf is over there somewhere, but getting close to it is not easy unless you are the guest of one of the resort hotels that line the beach, and I’m not: I’m here to work. (Yes, including over the weekend.)

But I did like this artwork which hangs on the wall of the pub/restaurant in which I ate my overpriced dinner. Better than landfill, anyway.

Items for collection

Thursday 25th July 2024, 4.20pm (day 4,718)

Items by road, 25/7/24

Not quite the latest pic in the ‘abandoned shoes’ series, as there is a pair here. Along with the other items they seem to have been placed beside the Keighley Road pavement deliberately, for collection and subsequent use by anyone who needs them. So if anyone in Hebden Bridge does want an old telephone, a plastic wine glass, a nail file, the shoes or the other things which were in the pile but unseen — feel free to go and inspect.

Entrance to University Place

Tuesday 8th February 2022, 10.40am (day 3,820)

Entrance to University Place, 8/2/22

The students are back — fortunately — and campus was busy today. All the same I want to epitomise the day with this unpeopled shot. If even recycling bins, and yellow warning signs, can look pretty, then you know the light is something special.

Electrical waste

Sunday 6th February 2022, 10.00am (day 3,818)

Electrical waste, 6/2/22

Asserting the “Right to Repair” electronic items is in the news (at least, the sort of news that I read); but largely it’s still cheaper to buy another one. We call places like this “recycling centres” these days but one has to wonder just how many of these items do, in the end, get reused.

The Soil, Brick & Rubble skip

Tuesday 1st November 2016, 2.50pm (day 1,895)

Skip contents, 1/11/16

After the collapse, the clean-up continues…. I pick this shot also because I like the subtle burst of light. It was another beautiful day today, much like last year’s 1st November: but after that, came the Great Wet of late 2015. Can’t see it happening this year however; but maybe after yesterday that’s just wishful thinking.
