Caught in the rain

Sunday 6th July 2025, 3.10pm (day 5,064)

Chimneys in rain, 6/7/25

Taken while sheltering under the tree on our allotment. Showers like this came in every half an hour or so for most of the day. Nothing else happened, but that’s the way it was planned.

Monsoon moment, Todmorden

Tuesday 3rd June 2025, 4.35pm (day 5,031)

Todmorden monsoon, 3/6/25

April and most of May were very dry but the last few days, though not entirely wet (Saturday was a pleasant day, for instance), have generally exhibited the characteristics of the North European Monsoon which we are all in denial about but is a regular Weather Phenomenon round here in early June. Here, it is seen in action at Todmorden, on my way home from a stint in Manchester. Pictures like this don’t always work but I’ll give this one a go, as it is the road which is in focus, rather than the raindrops on the train window.

Shower and sun

Tuesday 25th February 2025, 1.30pm (day 4,933)

Rain shower, 25/2/25

Back home, where it is, of course, raining. (It did seem to be threatening rain on one evening in Dubai but it never fell.) Then again, the sun is shining too, at this point in time. It’s this essential ambivalence that keeps us Britons who we are, I suppose.

Incoming…

Saturday 12th October 2024, 4.25pm (day 4,797)

AFC Fylde shower, 12/10/24

That’s definitely some rain coming in. The players are about to get wet, as, I imagine, are most of the people sat in the main stand to the left, with its rather inadequate roof. At least those of us stood on the ‘East Paddock’ of AFC Fylde’s Mill Farm stadium had more satisfactory cover.

Time to take shelter

Sunday 6th October 2024, 3.05pm (day 4,791)

Five minutes into the second half, and the cue came to watch the rest of the game from inside the clubhouse at Huddersfield Amateur FC (a place that has been seen before). Perhaps the visiting team, in orange, might have wished to join us, as they were at least 8 goals down by this point and we were nowhere near the end.

Rain, is what it is

Tuesday 4th June 2024, 4.15pm (day 4,667)

Rain and road, 4/6/24

I still have one walk left to do in my Lake District project and today might have been a day to go — but no. Good weather in 2024 has been at a premium. And so, that particular milestone will have to wait another three weeks at least.

Easter Monday, day out

Monday 1st April 2024, 3.10pm (day 4,603)

Rain at Brighouse, 1/4/24

This family (I suspect, a boy and his grandparents) were not the only ones wondering what they were doing outside this afternoon — particularly watching Brighouse Town, who slumped to a 1-5 home defeat. For the last 60% of April 2024 I will be somewhere with better (and certainly drier) weather than here — but I’m not there yet.

Flowers by the roadside

Thursday 14th March 2024, 12.20pm (day 4,585)

Flowers at no. 39, 14/3/24

From blue yesterday to this vivid red (with yellow shading) today. Dampness remains a constant, though.

Green light for more rain

Sunday 21st January 2024, 5.20pm (day 4,532)

Rain and green light, 21/1/24

Well, it was quite nice for a day or two. It didn’t last. This picture was chosen for today, in part, because Clare insisted I not use the one of her putting on her slippers, but nevertheless this does epitomise the day.

Driving through total crap for five hours

Wednesday 27th December 2023, 11.25am (day 4,507)

Crap drive home, 27/12/23

This is a totally crap picture, but it epitomises the day, entirely. The sunshine of Boxing Day was not sustained. We left Dundee at about 9am, I gritted my teeth and drove, and we staggered into Morecambe at about 2pm — an hour longer than it should have taken — battered by high winds, driving rain, surface water, low visibility, the lot. This is taken somewhere in the wilds of the Southern Uplands, in the indefinable watershed country between Tweeddale and Annandale, when I just had to pull over and stop for a few minutes.
