The Pixies

Wednesday 21st August 2024, 9.10pm (day 4,745)

The Pixies, 21/8/24

My 2023 Christmas present off Clare — the ticket for this gig — finally pays off. I guess you either know this band or you don’t: most likely it will be the track “Where Is My Mind” that rings bells, particularly if you’ve seen Fight Club. Having thought they were firmly on the “disbanded band” list, it turns out they reformed in 2004 and have been happily touring and releasing albums for the last 20 years without my noticing, but hey. Nice to finally make their live acquaintance. Here, the bassist seems to be consciously avoiding the limelight.

Johnny Marr does “How Soon is Now?”

Saturday 26th August 2023, 8.25pm (day 4,384)

Johnny Marr, 26/8/23

My 54th birthday. The title of this blog is now 12 years out of date, but never mind. A chance to celebrate this anniversary at the Piece Hall, Halifax, where The Charlatans were doing their own latest ‘Not Quite Dead Yet Tour’ (Tim Burgess is 56: we’ve both still got a couple of decades on Roger Daltrey, admittedly).

But they’ve been on here before, so let’s feature instead the Unexpectedly Decent Support Act, Johnny Marr — who dutifully did deign to perform the one and only Smiths song I really do give a toss about. Altogether now: “There’s a club if you’d like to go…. you might meet somebody who really loves you. So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry and you want to die.” Ah: How Soon Is Now? It does take me back.

Halifax goes Mediterranean

Saturday 27th May 2023, 10.45am (day 4,293)

Piece Hall, sunshine, 27/5/23

Mediterranean weather today, for sure — very pleasant. More of this weather, please — or will we get the June monsoon this year? I think the Piece Hall, restored a few years ago, also affects a kind of Mediterranean vibe, with its resemblance to a Roman forum. Either way, she was happy enough about being photographed, hence the wave.

Modern worship (Paloma Faith)

Saturday 2nd July 2022, 10.20pm (day 3,964)

Paloma Faith, 2/7/22

Our 23rd wedding anniversary. I took Clare to a non-league football match and she took me to see Paloma Faith. I have no idea who got the better of the transaction. Photography opportunities were better at the gig, even if musically this is not my thing. A couple of thousand other people seemed happy enough with it all, though.

In the Piece Hall

Thursday 24th March 2022, 1.30pm (day 3,864)

Piece Hall sculpture, 24/3/22

Since Halifax’s Piece Hall was renovated a few years ago it has become by far the most pleasing urban space in the town. The quadrangle is currently displaying a number of sculptures by Sophie Ryder, this being one of them; I recall a similar huge grey rabbit/woman at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park around a year ago, making me think, with hindsight, that this is probably the same artist. Incidentally, as far as I can ascertain, no actual rabbits have appeared on this blog in its 3,864 days.

Blue Bird enjoys his freedom

Thursday 23rd December 2021, 1.45pm (day 3,773)

Carousel, Halifax, 23/12/21

It’s Christmas — well, nearly. Whatever one’s stance on the battle to keep us locked up, and thus, in the thrall of newly-powerful financial interests that are exactly the ones pushing for further incarcerations (I wonder why), Blue Bird is still feeling happy about this time of year.

The Piece Hall

Monday 8th October 2018, 6.10pm (day 2,601)

Piece Hall, 8/10/18

Halifax’s Piece Hall was built in 1779 and was originally a textile market. It reopened last year after a very expensive restoration project, and certainly is a very smart place now: at the same time it has lost its old ramshackle appeal. Maybe there’s no way of keeping both. It’s not an easy place to photograph from ground level without getting the perpendiculars askew, but I did my best here.
