On York Minster

Saturday 25th November 2023, 2.55pm (day 4,475)

York Minster, 25/11/23

On the tourist trail today, and boy were there a lot of them, or should I say us. People everywhere, cramming the narrow streets of York, maybe they were enjoying themselves or maybe they were just participating, robot-like in the early stages of the now-mandated 7-week Thou Shalt Shop And Wear Silly Jumpers period: a reminder to some, there’s a whole month yet before Christmas Day. Anyway, this included walking past the Minster, as one does in York, and taking pictures of the people taking pictures — surely I appear on the shots captured by the woman in the red hat and the guy two places to her left.

The Last Class: photography ceremony

Tuesday 13th December 2022, 10.45am (day 4,128)

ETC last class, 13/12/22

It’s the last class of the semester, and the done thing among students now is “get a photo of themselves with the lecturer” at this point. I acknowledge this but it did require leaving at least 20 minutes at the end of the session so the ceremony could take place: what you see here is the queue after at least half of them had already had their time. I was feeling like a cardboard cut-out of myself by this point, although not an unhappy one. Here I said, ‘right, I’m taking a photo of all you lot while you wait to take a photo of me’… and this is the result.

Graduation photography

Tuesday 12th July 2022, 3.05pm (day 3,974)

I’d say ‘it’s that time of year again’ but this is the first mid-July since 2019 where there have been such scenes around campus. Ceremony does matter: it’s good to see these return.

Terracotta Army (illuminated)

Thursday 26th January 2017, 5.50pm (day 1,981)

Terracotta army, 26/1/17

Whereas last Chinese New Year, Exchange Square in Manchester displayed an inflatable dragon, this year we are graced with this illuminated plastic ‘terracotta army’, which may or may not be the tackiest thing I have seen in a while. Still, if the purpose of the display was to get mentions on social media, it has succeeded, going on the number of people taking photos of it today. Including me of course. Or perhaps I was photographing the crowd. But it doesn’t matter does it? The end result is the same. It is what we do now.

Enter the gladiators

Saturday 10th October 2015, 3.00pm (day 1,507)

Halifax Town, 10/10/15

Joe and I made one of our occasional trips to the Shay today to see Halifax v. Woking. Had never previously seen Halifax lose a match in 12 games spread over the last 18 years or so, but today they lived up to their league position and were comprehensively stuffed 3-0. Hence, the title of this post is somewhat ironic. Perhaps they would have done better had the furry bloke at the back been on from the start.
