The sparrow keeps warm

Saturday 3rd January 2026, 11.05am (day 5,245)

Sparrow on moss, 3/1/26

Along the stone retaining wall of Hebden Bridge railway station grow substantial patches of moss, and this little fellow was hopping along and burrowing into every little bit of it this morning, in search of food, unconcerned by my relatively nearby presence and far more bothered about staying warm on a cold winter’s day. Look how fluffed up its feathers are. I hope it sees out the winter.

Fungus settlement

Sunday 5th November 2023, 1.15pm (day 4,455)

Fungus settlement, 5/11/23

When I captured this clutch of fungi engaged in consuming this old tree down by the river, I had a feeling that I’d been here before. And so I had — getting on for seven years ago; it was 7/1/2017 when this symbiosis was seen from another angle. They’re taking their time, as the tree carcass doesn’t seem any smaller than it did back then. But if you are a fungus, I guess you see time differently.

Hebden Water, late December morning

Thursday 27th December 2012, 10.35am (day 490)

Hebden Water, 27/12/12

An early post, but there won’t be any more photos taken today – felt ill this morning, went on a walk to try to blow it out, but it didn’t work so I’ve been in bed all afternoon. If I stay here tomorrow, that could be a photographic challenge. Anyway, this is the path down by the Hebden Water, as it comes into town at the bottom of Spring Grove.

Mini-jungle, Keighley Road

Wednesday 21st March 2012, 8.50am (day 209)

Moss carpet, 21/3/12

It’s nice to have a change of scale occasionally. I can quite see this as a luxuriant jungle, hard up against some crags. If a condor were to be flying past in the middle-distance, or there were a little human figure in the foreground, about to plunge into the darkness beneath the trees, it would not look too wrong.

Actually this is a patch of moss on the top of the stone retaining wall between the A6033 and the Hebden Water, a minute’s walk from my house: total area covered by this photo, less than a square foot. How much of the world do we so often miss seeing?
