Empty clothes shop

Wednesday 25th April 2012, 8.45am (day 244)

Empty shop, 25/4/12

I’m sure there was a functioning shop here the last time I looked (which was probably last week some time). But its gone now. Reflections on a shot are normally annoying, but here they don’t harm it, I think. You get a double dose of the photographer as well, if you look carefully.

Today is the eight-month point of the blog, which means I am two-thirds of the way through my intended project – to take and post a representative picture for every day of the year.

Steep Fields Steps, Hebden Bridge

Saturday 21st April 2012, 2.05pm (day 240)

Steep Fields steps, 21/4/12

This staircase-cum-alleyway leads down the side of our allotment (which sits behind the hedge to the right). It’s a lot steeper than it looks on this photograph, and a tiring climb which is probably why this cat is doing the sensible thing and just chilling. After a very busy – and mentally confusing – week for me, I know how it feels; I did as little as possible today.

Pub door and duck

Friday 20th April 2012, 3.10pm (day 239)

Duck outside pub, 20/4/12_low-res

This whole line of ducks took it upon themselves to saunter up the main street of Hebden Bridge today: sort of like we used to do while at primary school, to dash through the secondary school campus now and again on the way home and feel dead hard about it. I was too slow with my camera to capture more than this one, but never mind.

Memorial Gardens, Hebden Bridge

Sunday 15th April 2012, 12.15pm (day 234)

Memorial gardens, 15/4/12

No particular story behind this one, just a photo to encapsulate what was a nice, sunny day – although a chilly one.

Back to work tomorrow after 11 days off. Well, I suppose it’s gotta be done now and again.

Happy Easter

Saturday 7th April 2012, 10.45am (day 226)

Easter egg, 7/4/12

Historically, as eggs were not supposed to be eaten during Lent, but you can’t persuade chickens to stop laying them for the duration, there would always have been a surplus of them at Easter. Hence, the practical usefulness of the tradition of the Easter egg. Apparently.

This display currently decorates the window of the Yorkshire Soap Co. in Hebden Bridge. Incidentally I like the very mild risque touch in this picture of confectionery, thanks to an unanticipated reflection.

Nutclough and Eiffel Buildings, Hebden Bridge

Sunday 1st April 2012, 9.20am (day 220)

Nutclough rooves, 1/4/12

It’s been interesting to use the progress of this blog to check the movement of the sun across the sky. Back in December it was setting behind the mobile phone mast you see here (and here); now it sets behind the houses much further round the valley. And the light hits bits and pieces of the architecture in slowly changing ways each week. Like this morning, when I looked out from my house and saw these chimney stacks lit up while the rest of the streets beneath were still in shadow.

Mini-jungle, Keighley Road

Wednesday 21st March 2012, 8.50am (day 209)

Moss carpet, 21/3/12

It’s nice to have a change of scale occasionally. I can quite see this as a luxuriant jungle, hard up against some crags. If a condor were to be flying past in the middle-distance, or there were a little human figure in the foreground, about to plunge into the darkness beneath the trees, it would not look too wrong.

Actually this is a patch of moss on the top of the stone retaining wall between the A6033 and the Hebden Water, a minute’s walk from my house: total area covered by this photo, less than a square foot. How much of the world do we so often miss seeing?

Girl and birds by the river

Friday 16th March 2012, 9.15am (day 204)

By the river, 16/3/12

Yes, I know it’s blurred. But one of these days I’ll take a photo like this and it’ll be sharp, and then the world is my oyster 🙂

Blossom in Calder Holmes park

Wednesday 15th March 2012, 8.40am (day 203)

Blossom in the park, 15/3/12

I have been trying hard not to repeat myself on this blog but there was a good excuse to do so today. One thing I hope this blog will come to show is the changing of the seasons, particularly in Hebden Bridge which for obvious reasons is going to provide the majority of these shots. Compare this shot to the one taken nearly six months ago, on October 20th, from exactly the same position, and you’ll hopefully see what I mean.

The evening sky

Thursday 8th March 2012, 4.55pm (day 196)

Sunset, 8/3/12

Have we had a ‘Hebden Bridge sky’ picture for a while? No, I didn’t think so either.
