Early morning, Abu Dhabi airport

Monday 27th May 2013, 1.05am (day 641)

Abu Dhabi airport, 27/5/13

The title of this post is used with a mild sense of irony. Because of the role this airport wants to play — a bridge between Europe and East Asia/Australia as well as a destination in its own right — many of the flights seem to land and leave here between midnight and 3am, to fit in with flight schedules to and from countries that have stricter controls on when planes can come in and out. As a result, Abu Dhabi airport was as busy at 1am as anywhere I’ve ever been. I didn’t deliberately get a shot of these two, but was taking something of the decorative pillar in the center of Terminal 1 — as many other people were doing to pass the time — as she turned around. Cropping did the rest, it’s a bit out-of-focus but never mind, I quite like this shot.

And so, thanks to a three-hour stopover, another country, the United Arab Emirates, technically makes it onto the blog, though I don’t consider I visited the place. However, I think this shot is a little more representative than the dull one, technically of Singapore, that I got on the stopover during my flight out just over four months ago. This shot also becomes the earliest on any of the 641 days so far, and one of only four taken before 6am.

Cancelled

Friday 9th November 2012, 1.20pm (day 442)

Cancelled. 9/11/12

Screw technical or aesthetic quality, if there was ever a photo which encapsulated a day this is it – I was supposed to be on this 13.35 flight to Copenhagen but as you can see it was cancelled, and seven hours later – eight-and-a-half hours after I arrived – I’m still here in Bergen airport. What a jævla drittsekk of a day. (Translate it if you want.)

Copenhagen Airport

Wednesday 7th November 2012, 2.55pm (day 440)

Copenhagen airport, 7/11/12

I haven’t always spent this much time travelling, you know. It really started to take off (ha ha) around the middle of 2010, the first time I came to Bergen (and Scandinavia) in fact; since then I have averaged a trip a month, and in 2012 more than that. That’s just the way my job works now, I have little commutes (to Manchester) and big commutes (usually to Bergen or Moscow) and beyond the time they take they all feel rather much the same now. It ain’t glamorous. It’s just work.

Atlanta airport mural

Friday 20th July 2012, 6.40pm [Eastern time] (day 330)

Atlanta airport, 20/7/12

On my way home. Quite liked this mural, which came in two parts, the full classical quote being ‘Let each man pass his days in that endeavor wherein his gift is greatest’, which if we can excuse the sexism and include women too, is a worthy message. What I liked about it was that it is all made up of thousands of business cards. A neat idea.

Arrivals hall, Domodedovo airport

Sunday 24th June 2012, 8.10pm (day 304)

Arrivals hall, 24/6/12

Well, here we are, off again. To a country that may have massive political and social problems, but has at least heard of the notion that in June, it’s supposed to be summer.

Self-portrait, Domodedovo Airport, early morning

Sunday 11th December 2011, 4.50am (day 108)

Domodedovo, early morning, 11/12/11

Well, this is certainly the earliest time yet for a daily pic, by a margin of some 110 minutes. Still, it could have been worse. It could have been Sheremetyevo airport. (This wry comment of course means nothing to anyone unfamiliar with the pleasures of Russian airspace.)
