Calder Holmes Park, Sunday morning

Sunday 13th January 2019, 11.05am (day 2,698)

Calder Holmes footie, 13/1/19

For once, a football match captured in passing, rather than one I specifically attended. Calder Holmes Park, in town, is a picturesque spot to get competitive on a Sunday morning. One for the traditionalists…

A favourite

Saturday 12th January 2019, 7.05pm (day 2,697)

Quadrophenia, 12/1/19

Each month the “Friends of the Picture House” can nominate a movie to be shown there on a Saturday afternoon. Clare has been on the committee for about a year now and we’ve been feeding her suggestions. Finally, today, one came through: Quadrophenia. I may have had something to do with this… and so did Joe, for whom it is also a favourite movie. I’m sure The Favourite is a very good film too (it’s supposed to be), but it was the lower of the two that drew us in today. Have you ever had a movie request shown at the pictures? It’s fun, if you can make it happen.

Taking it easy

Friday 11th January 2019, 11.05am (day 2,696)

HB market, 11/1/19

I don’t want you to think I busted a gut today, either: although I did do work at home. It’s not a busy time for me. I’d say this is normal for January, but actually it isn’t: six years ago today, for example, I was flying over the Sahara on my way to Kenya. But in 2019 I’ve a couple more weeks at home yet, before there’s any real change of scene.

Misty campus evening

Thursday 10th January 2019, 4.30pm (day 2,695)

Misty campus evening, 10/1/19

A full day in Manchester, and into the evening as well. By late on the city had become clamped under a vast sea of fog; here at 4.30 the first inklings of it give a romantic quality to the older remaining campus buildings.

House view

Tuesday 8th January 2019, 10.40am (day 2,693)

Eiffel buildings, 8/1/19

It’s an attractive view, for sure, but I’m seeing it quite a lot lately. I feel a little hemmed in… I need to move around more. The weather forecast is good tomorrow though — time for a walk.

Waiting by the weir

Thursday 27th December 2018, 10.55am (day 2,681)

Heron, 27/12/18

On how many otherwise boring and photograph-free days has a heron down on the river saved the blog post. Today was one of those days. Handsome beasts, always…. and damn, are they patient.

A night out on the cobbles

Saturday 22nd December 2018, 12.45am (day 2,676)

St George's Square, 22/12/18

It’s been a while since a post-midnight shot made it onto the blog; my Saturday was otherwise entertaining enough but rather than display more football, here is Clare coming home from our Friday night out (also undepicted). A night out on the cobbles, rather than the tiles? Either way, Christmas is upon us, more or less.

Putting my feet up

Sunday 16th December 2018, 4.00pm (day 2,670)

Feet up, 16/12/18

A very unexciting day today, not least because I had to work for much of it — but by this point, that is over, and there are only two more working days left for me until Christmas. Whether the break will get much more exciting than this, who knows; but as usual at this time of year, I couldn’t really care.

Factory

Friday 14th December 2018, 9.35am (day 2,668)

Factory records, 14/12/18

The corner of Charles Street and Princess Street in Manchester: a significant place in rock music history. I’m declaring a moratorium — no more photos of building sites here for a while. But there’s nothing wrong with putting up photos of a Factory. (The old Factory Records HQ, that is.)

Nutclough Mill, Sunday morning

Sunday 9th December 2018, 11.35am (day 2,663)

Nutclough morning, 9/12/18

This is first light for my locality on a December morning. I showed this pic to Clare today and asked her, without knowing anything about when I had taken it, she could nevertheless estimate when it was taken, based on her knowledge of the local geography. She got it right to within five minutes, which says something about how we get used to places.
