In the Sheffield fog

Thursday 26th December 2024, 1.30pm (day 4,872)

Wheel and fog, 26/12/24

Until about 2.30pm on Christmas Day I had not anticipated spending December 26th in Sheffield, but at that point an acquaintance told me of a spare ticket for a coach trip to go there and see the football (Sheffield United 0-2 Burnley, in case you were interested), and so it came to pass. In fact there were quite a few games in the area postponed or abandoned because of fog, which was certainly the main weather feature of the day. This is one of those shots that looks as if I’ve post-processed it and turned it monochrome, but that’s not the case: this is really what Sheffield city centre looked like at about 1.30pm.

World’s Oldest Football Ground

Sunday 6th August 2023, 3.10pm (day 4,364)

Hallam FC, 6/8/23

One to add to the ‘superlatives’ at the bottom of the stats page, the next time I update it. Hallam FC have been around, as the stand says, since 1860, and have always played here, at Sandygate, in the west of Sheffield. According to the Guinness Book of Records, this makes this place the oldest football ground in the world. Hallam are the second-oldest club, after Sheffield FC: I guess it made sense to start no. 2 fairly near to no. 1, after all, they needed someone to play. (What the third-oldest club — Cray Wanderers, from Kent — did at first with their playing time is not as yet recorded.)

Kiveton Miners Welfare FC

Saturday 15th January 2022, 3.20pm (day 3,796)

Kiveton MW v Sheffield, 15/1/22

Forty or more years ago, in the background of this image would once have been a colliery. Not any more, but the name and very existence of Kiveton Miners Welfare FC pays homage to the vanished industry. A cold day in South Yorkshire, but the sun came out in the second half and washed everything in gold, so I forgave it.

Juice landscape

Friday 28th May 2021, 7.55am (day 3,564)

We can’t have the more resource-efficient carafes of fruit juice because that way we will get the plague, or something Then again, there seemed only three people breakfasting this morning in the hotel, like the scene in Invasion of the Body Snatchers when the main characters go out for dinner and it’s like, ‘where is everyone?’. Nah, we don’t do that kind of thing, in the anticipated future. The mirror in the background doubles up on the number of cartons, and also makes this a self-portrait, kind of.

Embrace Sheffield

Thursday 27th May 2021, 7.35pm (day 3,563)

Embrace, Sheffield, 27/5/21

Gosh — sunny and warm weather, and a night out with friends. Embrace both, infeed. But like Manchester, the city of Sheffield is only half-alive, so much is boarded up, shuttered, or simply closed. Huge numbers have been vaccinated and still we are pushed the fiction that everyday life has become ‘unsafe’, that asserting our freedom is selfish. This virus will be around for the rest of our lives. Time to get used to it.

Outside Sheffield station

Thursday 14th March 2019, 10.05am (day 2,758)

Sheffield, 14/3/19

This week has seen me perambulating around what feels like half of England. I came home from Derby via Sheffield, partly because that’s how the trains work out but also because I wanted to consult a book in their university library (how terribly scholarly a week it has felt, too). This water feature outside the station always looks quite good, even when it’s not operating. The mirrored wall behind does nice things to the sky.

Barman, Sheffield Tap

Friday 25th April 2014, 1.00pm (day 974)

Barman, Sheffield Tap, 25/4/14

A bit out-of-focus but everywhere I went today it was throwing it down with rain so no really decent pics today. This is posted firstly because it’s a nice pic of someone just doing his job well, but secondly (and mainly) because this guy looks exactly like Walter White Jr (aka Flynn) from Breaking Bad.

Near Peace Square, Sheffield

Thursday 24th April 2014, 11.15pm (day 973)

Sheffield night, 24/4/14

Taken on the way back to the hotel after the conference dinner. It’s about time I had a late night shot, I don’t spend all my life going to bed at 8pm you know (though I do spend some of it). Latest shot in a day since 24th October, and the blog’s first one from Sheffield, former home of the British cutlery industry, the pop group Pulp, the World Snooker Championship (right now) and a couple of football teams which I’ve crossed paths with now and again.
