Pigeon and pool (early)

Tuesday 1st April 2025, 7.55am (day 4,968)

Pigeon and pool, 1/4/25

Once again, not the most exciting day, photographically or otherwise. But this one can make the cut for the curiosity factor of a pre-8am shot in Manchester: the earliest taken there since December 2022. These used to happen a lot more often; in 2019 alone I count six. But in 2019 I was still trying to be some kind of ‘manager’ at work. Not any more. These days, the Exchange Square pigeons can have their early morning paddles without me. In fact that was the last day I will be on campus until the 22nd.

The Lido at La Vallette

Sunday 12th August 2018, 3.35pm (day 2,544)

La Vallette Lido, 12/8/18

Lidos, or public outdoor swimming pools, were all the rage in the Victorian era, but many have fallen into disrepair. This one, just south of the town centre of St Peter Port, is apparently being restored and could reopen soon. It was a grey and drizzly day in Guernsey although the forecast for the rest of the week is pretty good. In the background, Castle Cornet, which has guarded the port here for 800 years or more, and on the horizon, the island of Herm.

The orange bikes

Tuesday 13th February 2018, 9.55am (day 2,364)

Bike pool, 13/2/18

Making transport communal has always seemed to me to be the most sensible solution. I haven’t owned a car for some twelve years now, at least, but I am a member of a car pool. These orange bikes get unlocked by some code you can get on your mobile phone, you use them, leave them at your destination so someone else, possibly, can use them there. So simple. Unlike the similar ones I saw in Brisbane five years ago, these ones are seen to be used now and again. And yet there are some who would react even to this basic and friendly form of socialism by frothing at the mouth.
