Scoreboard duties

Tuesday 13th October 2026, 8.10pm (day 5,528)

FCUM scoreboard, 13/10/26

FC United of Manchester like to think themselves a sort of throwback to a more soulful and authentic era of football and, being honest, this is not an entirely fanciful self-image. Certainly they never worried about installing some fancy electronic scoreboard gizmo in their otherwise well-appointed Broadhurst Park ground. Does the operator get in for free I wonder? She only had a couple of bouts of activity: the final score was FCUM 1-1 Emley on this mild Tuesday evening.

The lights have gone out

Wednesday 4th March 2026, 9.05pm (day 5,305)

Floodlight failure, 4/3/26

Five minutes into the second half of tonight’s game at Brighouse Town, half the lights went out. At that point, this picture was taken. About a minute later, the remaining lights went out too, and the game was abandoned: as a football fan, my third ever abandonment, one of them because of a serious injury, one because of rain (at Accrington Stanley) and now tonight. Brighouse have been rather inept on the pitch lately, so perhaps this off-pitch ineptitude is all just part of the bigger picture.

Bower Fold, Stalybridge

Tuesday 12th September 2017, 8.50pm (day 2,210)

Stalybridge Celtic, 12/9/17

Yes, it’s raining again — it’s rained seemingly constantly since I got back from America, it feels like. And yes, it’s football again, though several levels below what I saw on Saturday — tonight, I was on assignment at Stalybridge Celtic v Buxton in the Northern Premier League. On a night like this, it was not a glamour posting. I doubt the linesman would think it was, either.
