Vintage (open daily)

Monday 1st September 2025, 3.05pm (day 5,121)

Vintage shop, 1/9/25

It is far easier to buy this kind of stuff in Hebden Bridge than it is to purchase, say, socks, or useful modern technology. This is just one of at least three shops of this kind here, and it’s not even that big a town. There is something of an optical illusion going on here — things are not quite as big as they seem…

Someone else’s stuff

Wednesday 7th May 2025, 11.35am (day 5,004)

Cardboard boxes, 7/5/25

Never even got close to leaving the house today. The living room was mostly out of bounds, thanks to deliveries of stuff in cardboard boxes that has just kept on coming over the last few days, and some of it isn’t even ours. If Kevin from Morpeth is wondering where his box of chocolate bars is, we’ve got it, it’s one of those in the picture.

Film junk

Tuesday 5th November 2024, 4.00pm (day 4,821)

Film junk, 5/11/24

Down the years I have come to the conclusion that if one wants to simply do as one pleases in public space in the UK, there are two foolproof methods for achieving this. First, try pulling on a high-visibility coat of some kind. No one will then question your behaviour. The other is to say, “We’re filming”. You are then permitted to fill any thoroughfare with junk, block rights of way with impunity, and do so on a regular basis for months on end. Whatever forthcoming TV epic has been in production in Hebden Bridge since the summer (and we know what it is: something about a female 70s punk rock band), it had better turn out good.

In Affleck’s Palace

Friday 3rd March 2023, 3.30pm (day 4,208)

Affleck's objects, 3/3/23

The independent retail institution that is Affleck’s Palace in Manchester seems, thankfully, to have survived all that virus-related crap and remains the place to go if you want to buy just about anything that is a little off-beat (and see its previous appearance). There are dozens of stalls like this. I wasn’t in the place to pick up a gas mask, however, in case you were wondering.

Antique shop

Tuesday 28th June 2022, 3.30pm (day 3,960)

Antique shop, 28/6/22

More junk, like yesterday. But no one would come in if it were called a ‘junk shop’, so the word ‘antique’ is employed to give these various discarded pieces of trash some cachet. But it’s all for show. Take the false teeth visible to top right, for example. However old they are, I doubt they would be employed by a set decorator for some period movie.

In the junk shop

Sunday 30th September 2018, 3.45pm (day 2,593)

Typesetting tray, 30/9/18

This is one of those junk shops that has grandiose self-image and calls itself an “Antiques Centre” but we’ll let it off. I believe this object is an old typesetting tray, the kind of thing useful when typefaces came as hundreds of small carved pieces of metal. What practical use to anyone it is nowadays, I cannot imagine, but on the other hand it is a pretty cool lump of wood if you ask me. Not that I decided to lug it home or anything.

Princess Street, Manchester

Wednesday 9th September 2015, 3.10pm (day 1,476)

Princess street, 9/9/15

There’s a lot of junk in this street scene isn’t there? Well, as I said a few days ago, the whole of Manchester city centre is littered with junk and building debris at the moment. Two days in a row in Manchester for the first time in two months — which I guess is as good a sign of impending autumn as anything.
