Sunday morning on the marshes

Sunday 2nd February 2025, 10.20am (day 4,910)

Hackney marshes, 2/2/25

I went to two football matches today. In the evening, one at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, a vast construction of steel and glass and with all these escalators that make it look like an airport. In the morning, here — Hackney Marshes, with none of those things. I have to say, I preferred the morning.

This trip started in London on 6th January and ends here too. But it’s time to go home.

Sunday morning on the Marshes

Sunday 28th January 2024, 10.05am (day 4,539)

Hackney Marshes, 28/1/24

I wouldn’t want to come here in the wind and rain but on a glorious, sunny Sunday morning — which today was — I could not think of much better to do in London than revisit Hackney Marshes. It’s an evocative sight as you come over the bridge at the north end and see this view. The place is so big it’s still about 20 minutes’ walking from here to the other end.

Hackney Marshes: temple of football

Sunday 8th October 2023, 10.50am (day 4,427)

Hackney Marshes, 8/10/23

Many places describe themselves as the Home of Football or something similar, but Hackney Marshes in London has as good a claim as any. 88 football pitches make this probably the largest single centre for football in the whole world. About 30 of them were being used today by a diverse range of teams including UK Moldova FC, FC Karpaty, Flamengo, Limehouse Tigres. The sun was shining. You have your Mecca I’m sure, perhaps this is mine.
