Cougar Park gates

Saturday 20th September 2025, 4.00pm (day 5,140)

Cougar Park gates, 20/9/25

I pick this shot for the colour palette mainly — the blue of of his jacket works very well. It is taken from inside the ground, as the reversal of the lettering makes evident. As you can also see — it is raining, a lot. But the game behind me did manage to reach a conclusion. Nothing to do with Keighley Cougars, a rugby league club (you have never seen rugby league depicted on here, and unless I radically change in my remaining years, you never will) — the owners of that club decided they fancied a football team as well so simply bought one, Eccleshill United of Bradford, and teleported them here for as long as they feel like dabbling in another mode of football.

Fungus field

Sunday 27th November 2022, 10.40am (day 4,112)

Fungus field, 27/11/22

I’m not confident enough to start picking and frying random fungi that I come across along the way, though I know some who will do so. These look tasty enough to me though. As pictured in the garden of the B & B, but a less gratuitous shot than yesterday evening’s.

Gate, Halifax Minster

Sunday 31st October 2021, 4.10pm (day 3,720)

Halifax Minster is a great, soot-coated monolith of a church, and its gate provides a suitably Gothic (and autumnal) vista for this year’s Halloween shot, with Clare playing the part of the spectral apparition. Maybe. Anyway, with this shot, the town of Halifax hauls itself up to 9th place in the ‘all-time list’ (see the stats), with its 34th appearance on this blog.

Gate to the woods

Thursday 25th June 2020, 7.55am (day 3,227)

Gate to woods, 25/6/20

What’s been lacking over the last three months is not just variety of scene, but variety of event. There’s nothing happening, no parties, no shows, no sports, no conviviality. We just plod on.

At least there is still variety of light. The morning, indeed the whole day, was a beautiful one. This becomes the first pre-8am shot since I was still commuting to Manchester at the beginning of February. But this one is taken within yards of my house, and despite the glorious weather was one of only two photos I felt moved to take today.

Scarside Lane (Withnail and I double bill, part 1)

Tuesday 31st October 2017, 3.05pm (day 2,259)

Scarside gate, 31/10/17Catching up after a two-day trip to the Lake District to give Joe something to do during this week’s half-term holiday. (And me, a break from work.) As we are both fans of the movie Withnail and I (who isn’t?), motivation and interest could be added to the walking by cheaply visiting a location or two. The first is here — what you see here is the gate that Withnail forgot to shut, thus leading to “I”‘s encounter with the bull. “Run at it, shouting!” “That can’t be right! Bastard’s about to run at ME!”

Tree and gate

Friday 22nd August 2014, 9.30am (day 1,093)

Tree and gate, 22/8/14

Maybe it would be a better shot if it was just the tree, or just the gate. But it’s what it is. Last day of a week spent mostly at home.
