Cragg Vale’s bunting, at dawn

To mark the passing of the Tour de France, pictured yesterday of course, the people of Cragg Vale, a valley to the east of Hebden Bridge, created the world’s longest-ever line of bunting — 12,115 meters, or over seven miles, with nearly 60,000 flags (see this page for the details). It ran up the longest continuous uphill gradient in England, which the cyclists ascended after leaving Hebden Bridge yesterday.

And why the hell was I there at 3.45 in the morning? Well, off on another work trip — you’ll see where tomorrow. What I’ve also done is definitely break the record for the earliest ever morning shot on this blog. There have been three before at around 1.00-1.45am but all of them were from me having stayed up from the night before. Today’s was definitely the earliest shot at which I’ve had to respond somehow to an alarm call.

The Pulpit Rock

I booked today in as a day off months ago specifically so I could go up here. This has been called one of the greatest views in the world by the Lonely Planet guide (see this page) and, well, see for yourself. This is Preikestolen, or “The Pulpit Rock”, which hangs 604 meters, or over 1,980 feet, vertically above the Lysefjord below. Should you visit it, you won’t be alone — but at least the other people give it a suitable sense of scale. An amazing place, and I highly recommend it.

Roof slates

There is a month — this being April, 30 days — to go until I hit the 1,000-day mark on this blog, on 21st May. I have been mulling over whether or not to keep it going after then. The difficult days are not the ones where I travel and have plenty of source material but ones like today, when I’m inside, working, throughout and the light isn’t great. (Yes, I went back to work today after 10 days’ break.) Sometimes I feel like I am running out of ideas, at least to keep coming up with a new post every day. But I do promise to try to get to the 1,000 and that gives me time to consider my options.

Compelling myself to post each day at least forces me to try to see the world from an artistic perspective and within my technical abilities, capture something interesting about it, even if I am stuck at home. Like this evening’s shot, where the setting sun reflected off the residue of an earlier rain shower and produced this rocky, arid landscape on the slates of our roof.

Stoodley Pike monument

Erected in 1856, this replaced an earlier version which was destroyed by lightning, and commemorated the defeat of Napoleon. It is 120 feet (37m) tall and one can climb up to the top of the pedestal for an extensive view over the surrounding area. Something of a standard landscape shot in this vicinity, but despite 24 years’ living here between them, neither Clare nor Joe had been up there before, so on this Easter Saturday we rectified that.

Arthur’s Seat

Arthur's Seat, 8/4/14Among Edinburgh’s many endearing qualities is the fact that it has a mountain right in the middle of the city. OK, so Arthur’s Seat is only a little mountain, but it’s rugged and you have to do some scrambling to get to the very top. It’s great to get up to somewhere like this and still be down again in time to start work by 10am, which is what I did this morning.

Cloud Man

Maybe I’m the only one who can see, in this cloudscape, the figure of  a kind of zooming, superhero Cloud Man, streaking across the sky with his blond hair flowing behind him in the wind. But as I can see it, that’s why I took the picture.

This is how Galileo felt

I had a really nice, artistic shot of some alley in Manchester city centre lined up as today’s choice. It was a beautiful day, with great light throughout.

But…. this is JUPITER. And Io, and Europa, and (I am taking a stab at this) Ganymede. And there are colours (look how Ganymede to the right is whiter than the rest.) With an ordinary digital camera. Pictured from Yorkshire. It’s awesome.

Riverside path, 16/2/14

Beautiful day today, one of those February days in which spring can be felt in the air for the first time. Oh, I know it won’t last. But it was good to be outside today, even if this path was damned muddy.
