Shed spider

Tuesday 15th April 2025, 11.30am (day 4,982)

Shed spider, 15/4/25

The really big buggers that used to reside in our sheds — like this one, for example — have not been seen for some time, unfortunately. But the ones presently residing in the accommodation are big enough, and if it the evidence is anything go by, they are laying eggs.

Coal shed textures

Tuesday 3rd December 2024, 11.55am (day 4,849)

Coal shed, 3/12/24

A day on which I came very close to having nothing to photograph, but I did decide, around noon, that it was interesting that the coal shed of one of the houses across the road actually does have coal in it at the moment. The photo is one of textures, making a kind of collage. That’s my justification, at least.

Jamestown banyan tree

Tuesday 30th April 2024, 10.50am (day 4,632)

Banyan tree, 30/4/24

I’m no botanist but banyan trees aren’t difficult to identify, with their multiple trunks and more on the way. This is the blog’s second, after the one seen in Brisbane (with the wife) back in 2013.

Spider on bottles

Thursday 28th September 2023, 2.00pm (day 4,417)

I was going to post something about how the truly large cave spiders that once lived in our shed (see here, for instance) haven’t made an appearance for a while. Then this morning — the day after this picture was taken — a “spider the size of a Buick” (to quote Woody Allen) turned up in the bathtub. This one’s big enough however. And I needed those bottles to decant the plum wine….

A house of doors

Thursday 12th November 2020, 9.30am (day 3,367)

Riverside shed, 12/11/20

Well, it’s not a house in the sense that anyone lives here — at least, not yet (wait a couple of years and this might be the only thing round here that many people can afford). Spotted on one of my random walks around the local area that are the only meaningful activity available to us right at the moment.

Thanks, Ciara

Thursday 13th February 2020, 1.55pm (day 3,094)

Capsized shed, 13/2/20

The storm last Sunday took our allotment shed and flipped it neatly upside-down, while nestling it comfortably beside our neighbour’s greenhouse (which only partly survived the experience). We could move it, but I believe Ciara’s sibling Dennis is on the way in this coming weekend to entertain us further, so let’s leave it there for now, it’s probably safer where it is.

Monday morning cup of tea

Monday 4th June 2018, 9.55am (day 2,475)

Monday morning tea, 4/6/18

Started the first day of my working week in London, travelled to Manchester, finished it at home in Hebden Bridge. This guy may not have left Argyle Square in that time, but I’m sure he was just as productive as me in the end. I like all the vaguely different colours of brick on this shot.

The spider colony, rediscovered

Wednesday 17th August 2016, 9.35am (day 1,819)

Spiders and egg sacs, 17/8/16

Those of you who haven’t already quickly moved on, shrieking, may care that I hadn’t seen any of the cave spiders in the shed since a couple of years ago: 22/6/14 was the last appearance of one on here. Thought they had moved out, but three turned up today under an old table that we had in there. I think the one on the left is the one I got in a better picture of on 9/6/12; the red markings on the legs (though not that clear on this shot) are very similar. And look, it’s sweet. They’re breeding….

The cave spider, again

Sunday 22nd June 2014, 12.15pm (day 1,032)

Cave spider, 22/6/14

Apologies to the arachnophobes amongst you but I think these are beautiful and impressive creatures. I have no idea whether this is the same one I’ve captured before; there is definitely more than one living in our sheds, possibly three big ones or more. As long as their webs are not disturbed they make quite willing models.
