Relay station

Tuesday 8th April 2025, 11.00am (day 4,975)

Relay station, 8/4/25

In the years I have been doing this blog I have made my way through five cameras, giving an average lifespan, for each, of somewhere between two and three years. The latest came quite close to dying today: a few minutes after I took this picture I thought it had gone, in the same way as they always go, namely the zoom lens freezing up permanently. This would have been a major problem seeing as I am still stuck out in the mid-Atlantic, a few thousand miles from a reasonable camera retailer. However, after putting it in the fridge (literally), it has recovered, for now — but I will be using it sparingly for the rest of my time here. In which case, this is not going to be the very last shot taken with the Leica; but it was close to being.

This is the BBC World Service’s station on Ascension Island — from here, programmes are received, converted and relayed to South America and Africa, including until quite recently the Voice of America, but DOGE put paid to that, and as the manager of the station told me today, who is going to take up the slack? Russia and China, certainly. Thank you so much, MAGA. A fascinating morning in fact, but not an edifying prospect for the future, even if I do know more about global communications technology than I did last night.

Retro but necessary

Tuesday 27th August 2024, 6.05pm (day 4,751)

Cassette player, 27/8/24

This unashamedly retro object was one of my birthday presents. Why is such an anachronistic piece of kit being described as ‘necessary’? Because I still happen to have plenty of very good quality information stored in this particular medium; a good stock of compilation tapes, like any good 80s/90s boy. And the last cassette player I had access to disappeared with the recent scrapping of the Skoda Fabia I could hire from the local car club. But I still want to listen to My Stuff. And now, once again — at home, for the first time in years — I can.

The old board, Saint FM

Thursday 17th May 2024, 11.00am (day 4,649)

Radio plugs, 17/5/24

Had cause to return to Saint FM this morning, not to appear on the radio (unlike last time), just for a chat. My eye was drawn to this board, partly because of its nice grain, also because of the essential randomness of what’s there and what’s not. What did microphones 2 and 5-8 do to offend? What of L1, and what is an L anyway (loudspeaker)? Could I have centred it all a bit better? Probably.

Tammy of Saint FM

Wednesday 24th November 2021, 8.00am (day 3,744)

Tammy, radio woman, 24/11/21

Tammy is clearly the driving force behind St Helena’s radio station, Saint FM (I could give you the frequencies, but you’re not going to be able to pick it up right now unless you are on a boat somewhere in the nearby South Atlantic). I was an interviewee not just once, but twice today — the first very early, so apologies to Saint listeners if I sounded a bit fazed.

107.5 FM Radio Karamea

Friday 1st March 2013, 2.20pm (day 554)

Radio Karamea, 1/3/13

After my exertions on the Heaphy Track, spent the day chilling out and doing a bit of work at Rongo Backpackers in Karamea, another great hostel in another New Zealand town that feels like it’s halfway to the end of the world. This one was a little community operation, including a radio station broadcasting on 107.5 FM to the local area. “Want to play some of your tunes on the radio?” was asked. Sure, says I. That’s my iPod there, giving it out to the world. Well, to Karamea, anyway.
