Robben Island, Maximum Security

Friday 10th January 2025, 3.15pm (day 4,887)

Robben Island, 10/1/25

On the wall of the Cape Town terminal for the ferry to Robben Island is painted a quote from Nelson Mandela: “It is said that one only knows a nation until one has been inside its jails.” And he would know, as he spent 27 years in this place. The tour was worth doing, although it’s not as evocative a place as Alcatraz, nor as terrifying as the remains of the cells displayed at the War Remnants museum in Saigon. But none of these are places I would like to spend time — or Do Time. South Africa is a place which still has its problems but, with hindsight, the fact that it now seems to have had a reasonably stable democracy for 30 years post-apartheid, and all the systems and structures (like this place) which kept it going: these reflect well enough on the country.

Cell block Chelsea, 20 floors up

Tuesday 18th June 2024, 12.25pm (day 4,681)

Cell block Chelsea, 18/6/25

I have nothing against the Chelsea Hotel in Toronto — if I had I would not have come back here to stay for another two weeks, on top of the time I spent here earlier in the year. But I would like to go home now, and instead, I ended up for various reasons obliged to spent almost the entire day locked in my room, working. This semi-abstract architectural shot — one wing’s worth of floors 14-27 I reckon –thereby epitomises the day. A photowhack too, meaning, the only shot taken today.

Admissions room, Alcatraz

Tuesday 31st March 2015, 2.40pm (day 1,314)

Admissions room, 31/3/15

As of tomorrow I’m working, but today still had time to do the tourist stuff. Alcatraz was definitely worth a visit, if only because I’ve never seen the inside of a prison before (honest) and one realises now how accurate all those movie sets can be. It was only a federal prison for just over 30 years, though — it’s been a tourist attraction longer than that.
