Further intimations of autumn

Leaf and knot, 2/9/25

It’s only the second day of September but the kids have started back at school, it is much cooler and damper than it was, and there’s this general feeling of decline (and I don’t even mean in political terms, though we’ve certainly got that too). Autumn is upon us, I fear. Well, let’s make the most of it.

Ready to fly

The weather has been pretty good for some time now and things seem to be emerging earlier this year, nature-wise. It feels we should be well into May already, but that month doesn’t start yet for two more days. The dandeliion clocks are heavy with seeds, and an explosion is surely imminent.

Last year’s leaf

Leaf litter, 21/2/17

This leaf must have come down last autumn and ever since has been lying there, gradually decaying, into the layer of litter. Having somehow been shuffled to the edge of the deck, this morning it lay there catching the light in a pleasing manner. But this was an ephemeral beauty. The picture was taken at Hebden Bridge rail station and as I post this after passing the same point the next day, I did check on it — and it was gone, never to be seen again.
