Film junk

Tuesday 5th November 2024, 4.00pm (day 4,821)

Film junk, 5/11/24

Down the years I have come to the conclusion that if one wants to simply do as one pleases in public space in the UK, there are two foolproof methods for achieving this. First, try pulling on a high-visibility coat of some kind. No one will then question your behaviour. The other is to say, “We’re filming”. You are then permitted to fill any thoroughfare with junk, block rights of way with impunity, and do so on a regular basis for months on end. Whatever forthcoming TV epic has been in production in Hebden Bridge since the summer (and we know what it is: something about a female 70s punk rock band), it had better turn out good.

The TV people are back

Monday 19th August 2024, 11.00am (day 4,743)

TV light by Albert

Following the success of Happy Valley and its evident impact on Hebden Bridge’s tourist trade/appeal to stag and hen parties the BBC have been persudaded to return, having taken over chunks of the town centre and at least two of its pubs over August. Although apparently, this time, HB might be pretending to be Todmorden. Whatever…

Filming on campus

Wednesday 30th August 2023, 11.55am (day 4,388)

Campus is not exactly an over-used resource at this time of year but there were some signs of life today. And at least the sun put in an appearance, although whatever these guys were planning they still felt they needed additional illumination, and it’s the apparently floating light that offers this shot enough appeal to make it today’s choice.

On set

Monday 24th January 2022, 11.50am (day 3,805)

Filming Happy Valley, 24/1/22

I return here to a theme developed on Friday, but bear with me, it’s not an exciting time. Here we see the cones shamelessly deployed to ensure Sgt Cawood of Happy Valley always gets a parking space outside her house. I did wonder if they needed an extra for the role of “man with long coat and Brighton & Hove Albion shopping bag” but I don’t think that would have fitted the Yorkshire ambience, necessarily.

Filming “Happy Valley”

Friday 21st January 2022, 3.35pm (day 3,802)

Filming crane, 21/1/22

Those of you who enjoyed the previous two series of Happy Valley (and the first, at least, was excellent), be assured that a third series is on the way; no one in Hebden Bridge could have failed to appreciate this today.

One of the things that was good about the series was that it was all filmed on location in Calderdale, and extremely authentic: people used the right local names for things, for example (like calling Todmorden “Tod”, which everyone does). As this light was shining up Hangingroyd Lane this afternoon I assume that Sgt. Cawood is still going to be depicted as living at no. 29, so probably the one little bit of fiction will be retained — in the series, she can always get a parking space right outside her house, in the centre of town. Yeah…. right.

Joe the filmmaker

Monday 26th October 2020, 1.55pm (day 3,350)

Joe filming me, 26/10/20

Time is on our hands. I can’t easily get into Manchester this week as the train line is having one of its bouts of ‘maintenance’. Joe is on his half-term break. I needed a film making for teaching purposes and it gave us both something to do, and him something to put on his portfolio for later life.
