Working on the ‘Kookaburra Queen’

Kookaburra Queen, 6/5/13

The Kookaburra Queen is a Mississippi-style riverboat that seems to spend all its time moored at Eagle Street Pier on the Brisbane river: this is its paddlewheel. I assume it does see active service but whenever I go past, it’s there, a feature of my daily walk to work at QUT. I don’t have many of those left however – one week to go in Brisbane (and I’m spending half of that away, with three days coming up in North Queensland after tomorrow).

Ducks, Brisbane River

Ducks, Brisbane river, 30/4/13

Last day of April, the third full month in a row spent outside the UK, but the last on this current run – by the end of May I will be home. Either way, it’s about time we had some more ducks on this blog. I like ducks, and whatever sub species these individuals are an example of, they arranged themselves rather fetchingly along the Brisbane River bank this afternoon.

Brisbane River boardwalk

As you can see, it was a much nicer day today, but there is quite a lot of debris around the city from yesterday’s storm, particularly in the Botanical Gardens. And the Brisbane river is very full – but not yet flooding, indeed, there is evidence that it has gone down, namely the thin layer of mud over this boardwalk below the museums on the south bank. You can see here that it is scant inches – millimetres in fact – below the pedestrian and cycle track. Here’s hoping…
