Stiperden Bar House

Stiperden Bar House,

I drive past this house fairly often as it lies on most routes northwards from home. It’s certainly lived in on a permanent basis. I have always admired its glorious isolation, and what it must take to survive in reasonable condition 1,280 feet/380m up in the air in the middle of a peat moor. But would I want to live there myself? Not really. (If you want to check out its position on the Ordnance Survey map it lies at about grid reference SD910286.)

My Grandparents owned this house when I was a child. Must have been mid 1980s. They did move after a few years due to the extreme isolation, but I have always enjoyed fond memories of the house and playing on the moors. They owned a small patch of land on the other side of the road and I remember having bonfires there on bonfire night. They used to own a large guard dog and it lived in the stables at the side of the house. We used to put on puppet shows and the dog, Rex always had to have a ticket. I always feel a pull back to this house and have driven past a number of times as I live relatively close by. Jen

I pass by it reasonably often in the car and always feel it would be an amazing place to live — when the weather was nice. In a winter storm I imagine it’s a pretty harsh environment. Thanks for your comment 🙂

yes you’re right about the weather. Its lovely wandering the moors with all the heather up there and I loved the barren ruggedness of it. But in winter they would get snowed in so in the end it was too much.
