Victory celebrations

Sunday 24th May 2026, 1.35pm (day 5,386)

Cup winners, 24/5/26

The players and hangers-on of Andreou’s FC (it’s a bistro in Arbroath, apparently) celebrate their lifting of the Angus & Mearns Amateur Football Association Cup, and if you think it’s rather sad to get so excited about such a local thing, well, you didn’t live through their remarkable 7-5 win over Kirriemuir Thistle this Sunday morning. It was 3-3 at 90 minutes, and on a warm day, the period of extra time was characterised by some rather knackered defending, but I didn’t care and, evidently, neither did they. Well done to them.

I have been to 95 football matches this season — a new personal record — but today was the last. For a few weeks, anyway.

Trophies for day 4,000

Sunday 7th August 2022, 12.50pm (day 4,000)

Trophies, 7/8/22

I was looking around today for some kind of shot that represented the milestone I have reached today — four thousand days, which is, now you know, about three weeks short of eleven years. No big round numbers particularly revealed themselves, though I did look. But these trophies will do — I feel I deserve some kind of award, if only from myself. There have been times when I have felt like it’s been going long enough, particularly on those days when I’m staying at home with little to see. But usually, on the horizon, I can see something else ahead which keeps the interest going — like right now, with a holiday to come and then a (work) trip abroad… Let’s not give up just yet then. I would lose that little bit of creativity that I am currently obliged to display each day. And I’m not dead yet, either.

End of the season

Saturday 19th May 2018, 4.45pm (day 2,459)

Poulton FC celebrations, 19/5/18

37 competitions into my football season and this was the penultimate one today, Division 1 the West Lancashire League, where I saw champions Poulton FC lift the trophy. The post-match — and post-season — celebrations are about to start here. It’s been a fun way to spend a season but it’s getting tiring and I’m a little glad we’re moving into summer: but by late June I’ll probably be missing it.

Champagne celebration

Saturday 28th April 2018, 4.25pm (day 2,438)

Appleby celebration, 28/4/18

The football season is nearly over. Competitions are being resolved, trophies awarded. I forewent the possible pleasures of a hike today to go and see someone actually win something, in this case the Westmorland Senior Cup (competition 34 of my season), and congratulations to Appleby for taking the trophy with a 3-1 win over Kendal County. Their three dozen rather drunk but enjoyably boisterous travelling fans enjoyed the win just as much as the players did. At this level of football almost every game is a local rivalry: one reason why they’re worth supporting.
